Hello, we lost my Mum to pancreatic cancer a month ago and two weeks before she died my Dad went for an operation on nasal polyps only to find out it was a malignant melanoma. He has been put on the waiting list for urgent surgery but it will be close to the surgical margins around the brain and eye area and will need reconstruction work on his palate. We have been told it is quite rare and aggressive. Is there anyone out there who has been through or is going through similar? At this point we don't know what to expect. and how much care he will need after the operation, if he is able to have it.
Hi Floofmum. I can't really help with the surgery but thought I'd at least welcome you to the community. There are a few members here who have had surgery needing significant reconstruction. I'm sure they will pop on soon.
He's likely to have a tracheostomy as part of the op and will definitely need soft food to eat. He might have a feeding tube, in which case his dieticians will supply him with food replacement drinks. His team will go through all this with you
I have friends here in the community who have had radiotherapy and immunotherapy which may be an option but that's something for his oncologist
It might be worth joining the Melanoma Group too. Just click on the link in red.
Best of luck and I hope your father can have his operation soon

Hi Floofmum.Sorry to hear about your mum and what a blow to happen to your dad. I do have a friend who has has major reconstruction due a melanoma on her nose, she’s a very private person so doesn’t participate in chats. She went through quite a tough experience she’s 74 but now back to her self she did have 2 major ops and several facial reconstructions. has Dani says his team will go through everything with him, i hope you can attend appointments and take notes. If he needs radiotherapy I and others in here will be happy to help. Fingers x he has surgery soon.

Thank you so much for your message and support. Much appreciated. Found out today that he won't be having the operation as it wouldn't remove it all so there's no point. He is going to have immunotherapy instead (which at the beginning they said didn't think would work for him).
Bless you.
I really really hope it works for him. All you can do is put your trust in his team.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately he found out today that he won't be getting the operation after all as they say they wouldn't manage to remove it all. He is being offered immunotherapy instead. I can't attend appointments with him as we are literally at opposite ends of the UK. It's a bit stressful. Been up and down the M6 so many times recently.
Hi There has been some very good responses to immunotherapy in head and neck cancer patients.Sorry you are at opposite ends of the country ,my brother in law is having ti do similar journeys at the moment for his sister it’s so hard. Please keep us in loop when you have time.
