Hello, I'm new to this group so thank you for allowing me to be part of it. My husband was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is 18 RT sessions and 3 chemo sessions into his treatment. He has a feeding tube and is now on 3000 calories per day which is a bit of a struggle for him. More recently, he has started to get hiccups quite regularly and was up nearly all night last night with them. Does anyone have any advice as to why this is happening please? The MDT team said to try Gaviscon liquid but it hasn't worked? Any advice would be appreciated..Thank you

  • Hi, hiccups is a side effect of the Treatment and will stop after the Treatment, as for the feed, speak with his Nutritionist.  Hope all goes well.

  • Hi Welcome ti the grouo that none of us wanted to join. You can try slowing the feed down I was n g tube fed found it easier to do lits if small feeds and I had a pump that I could regulate also I stood up to feed as my tummy had shrunk. You could try gaviscon   But do tell team is he experiencing acid reflux ad wrll he may need a proton pump inhibitor like omaprozole. Well done on getting to 18  I am now 4 years post treatment. My blog below might help.

  • Thank you...just wondered as never really had before..

  • Hi
Two things to try. Warm the food before putting it into the feeding tube. Try pump feeding slowly. Night or day doesn’t matter. You can get a pump  from the hospital. I fed at night to leave the day free.
Dexamethasone can cause hiccups. Is he worse after chemo?
Have a chat with his dietician. I’m sure they will come up with something

  • Hi

just a note on the 3000 calories, i struggle with the special energy food which is pumped slowly straight into a feeding tube into my stomach as they take to hours although i can carry it on a small back pact find it annoying so skip taking them a lot. Pre cancer i was 95 Kg Mostly on my stomach and after all the treatment etc went down to 65 Kg (But not a good way to lose weight (LOL) My specialist who is brilliant said I need to be in my case 70Kg to keep healthy and strong to fight the cancer. saw him 3 weeks ago and he was not a happy bunny. as my weight had gone down to 64 Kg. made me promise to take the pouches and get the weight on ASAP i have nutritionists helping me and my wife as i am useless at looking after myself Probably too lazy. So, your husband has to realise the 3000 calories a day is so important for him in his battle against the cancer. It certainly is a battle but one i am determined to win.

  • If you're on a pump  try doing it overnight. I couldn't face having to fiddle about with it all day so night time feeds were a godsend leaving me totally free in the day
