I’ve been formally told I’m having a flap from my arm to cover the floor of my mouth where my cancer is, a bit on my tongue so that’ll be tethered again (had tongue cancer in 2011), 3-4 teeth removed, gum scraped and both sides of neck dissected as I have two enlarged lymph nodes on the right.
I’ll definitely have a tracheotomy, feeding tube, drains, catheter etc and will go to icu straight after the op.
I am so frightened as I hate hospitals and my operation 11 years ago went well but actually being in hospital sent me into anxiety and panic hell.
this has been caught early because I’ve been under maxfac for 11 years but the damage it’s caused and treatment I need is horrific! But hopefully curative and I just hope I don’t need radiotherapy afterwards.
No professional so it sounds axbitva mixed bag to me. Good luck for Monday, sure you don't need it, these teams are brilliant and I'm sure they will look after. You are clearly a very strong and resilient lady. Stay in touch everybodscexperienc3s inform and encourage the next!!!!!! X
I’m trying to keep calm and be resilient, it’s that fear of the unknown I guess. I just want this constant wave of panic in my head to go away as waiting 6 weeks from diagnosis to op has been hell on earth. All of us must feel the same when they’re told its cancer. No one wants to hear it!
Hi Mini
All I can do is wish you well and send you a hug. Trust your team and the hospital staff who will look after you.
Do you have a date for your surgery?

Hi Mini a hug from me. As we all know the waiting and fear if the u known is by far the hardest part. You can do this just put your trust in your team they are the experts. Am sure Sophie Baka Lynn will pop on soon she’s on round 2 of treatment as well.

Thank you so much, yes the waiting has been extremely painful and I suffer with mental health problems already so this has completely caused big anxiety and panic issues. I trust the team I’m under and know they will look after me. I struggle with change so being in a hospital 24/7 for potentially two weeks fills me with dread!!! X
Take stuff to keep you busy once you are out of icu. Phone, tablet with downloaded films/audiobooks, long charging lead, headphones, earplugs

Hi Mini
Sending you good wishes for Monday. The op will be over in no time at all and you sound as if you are well prepared. I think I said before that the time in ICU can be rather boring so as Dani suggested take along your phone and charger for the time you are in there. Remember that the tracheotomy is only for a few days but if you can take a very small whiteboard with you as this will help with communication during that time. At the least make sure you have plenty of paper and a pen.
Once you are on the ward you are well on your way to discharge. I also had a skin graft as part of my op and thought that I would be in hospital for 2 weeks but they let me out after 10 days with the NG tube in which was great. Prepare for 2 weeks but who knows it may not be quite that long.
Trust in your team and their experience.
Sending you hugs.
Lyn
