Hi all
i am 1 week from completion of Radiotherapy and chemo. For those who have completed treatment, how soon after did you get your taste back? How different is your taste? Are there foods you struggle to eat or taste?
any shared experiences are appreciated.

I couldn’t taste much for three months. I wAs a little happier at Six but it was a year before I could appreciate my food. Chili is off the menu but I can eat anything at three years plus.

Hi
I’m approaching week 25 post treatment. From week 4 of treatment until a few weeks post treatment I used my PEG Then I supplemented diet with daily Scandishakes. Everything tasted very salty for a while. Nothing tastes quite right even now. Things I used to love taste horrible so I have given up on tea, coffee, chocolate. I struggle with savoury foods as they don’t taste very nice. Need sauces, gravy, cream to eat anything dry. I can’t eat anything even mildly spicy as it causes ulcers. But I have found other foods that are easy to eat - soups (chicken & veg), cheesecake, salmon, mashed potato, sweet potato fries, root vegetables, ice cream… It’s a case of trial & error

Hi I was one if the odd ones I never lost taste i went the other way heightened taste and smell. 4 years on I can eat most things apart from spicy vinegar and citrus. But I’ve learned to adapt. Ti start with meat is hard lamb is the easiest but took around 3 months to be comfortable with it. Mince took much longer sweet potatoes easier than ordinary potatoes. Sweet things trifle’s custards were easier. 6 months can be a huge Turing point. In a years time you’ll look back and think I did it.
Hazel well done on completing treatment. My blog below might help. I’ve links to cook books let me know if you want them I’ll post links.

I'd like to add that three plus years after treatment, apart from having to pay OTT attention to oral hygiene and the fact that I do have reduced salivary flow, I am as I always was and food is good again. Three years 8 months? You'll probably think it's forever but believe me it's flown by and like childbirth the pain of it all has receded into some distant void to the extent that I can't recall it at all. I'll never forget the way my heart hit my boots when I found the cancer with my finger but the rest has gone...even though I'm here in the community giving others a helping hand.
It will be the same for you. They say improvements stop at two years. That's a fair generalisation but minor ones that do make a difference do continue past that date. You're really early on in your road to recovery. Don't despair...you'll get there
