I have recently been diagnosed with mouth cancer. It is under my tongue and my consultant wants me to have surgery. My brother passed away last year after this surgeon treated him with very similar cancer. We were very unhappy with the results of the surgery and if me and my brother were more aware of the side effects, he would not have gone down that road. I therefore have very little faith In My consultant. I would be very interested in any advice and or experiences from anyone to help me make my decision. Thank you.

  • Hi Jax. Welcome to our great community. Sorry to see you here.  had a similar cancer and I’m sure he will pop along this evening with his wise words

The truth of it is that cancer in this region is very aggressive and aggressive treatment is required but you do need faith in the team treating you

Are you in England? If you are you have every right to be seen at any hospital you like. Are you anywhere near any specialist cancer centre? That’s what I would be doing. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • Sorry to hear about your brother Jax, i had a very similar operation but it returned despite radio and chemo afterwards so after two more operations they finally halted it and i have been cancer free since 2010. Thankfully i had trust and confidence in my consultant as he never gave up finding a cure for me. Unfortunately and in some cases operations like this do fail despite everyone's best efforts. I fully understand your feelings so maybe your best option is to see a different consultant as it will be best for you and the consultant you are seeing now.

I would still recommend you go for the operation if the new consultant agrees, cancer in these areas is usually aggressive and can be difficult to treat and surgery is normally the best option, sometimes not all cancer operations or treatments work and there is some element of luck attached, most types of head and neck cancers have good success rates, at times i never thought i would make it but each operation was a gamble and it paid off for me, Wishing you all luck and hope it all goes well ,take care,
