my partner age 52 who is healthy and fit ,was diagnosed yesterday with back of throat cancer that's spread to one lymph node , hasnt had any symptoms except the lump in his lymph node so was shocked at the results, the consultant said it hasnt spread anywhere else and his aim is to cure it ,he has to go for an mri and has an appointment with the cancer team next week to discuss treatment , the consultant said it is likely to be 6 weeks monday to friday of chemo and radiotherapy, my partner is the only driver in our house and the hospital is about 45mins drive from home , will he still be able to drive or will we meed to try and organise a lift , the consultant had a really positive attitude but im worried sick wondering how we are goin to get thru this , our lives have just been thrown upside down, im hoping i will feel better once we have had the appointment with the cancer team

  • Hi I’ve done day 20 of 30 today, driven or ridden motorcycle to nearly all of them. I’m 61 with other health issues, it’s unrelenting but doable. Just stay mentally positive. Good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi debzy. Sorry to see you here but welcome.
First don’t panic. This cancer is eminently curable but the treatment is tough. Nothing much will happen for the first couple of weeks but as the side effects intensify it’s posdible you will need somebody to take him to hospital.
If he is on morphine by the end he wouldn’t be allowed to drive anyway.
Radiotherapy has residual effects for two or three weeks after treatment finishes and recovery is slow but sure.
There are many people who seem to get through this relatively unscathed but many don’t

Its best at least to have a plan B

Stick around. There are lots of people here to lend you a hand

    You will.
Once his plan has some solidity and you have dates you will both feel better.
It’s a few weeks out if your lives. Most of us make a good recovery.

  • Hi Debzy. Welcome to the club none of us wanted to join. I’m almost 4 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes. I too had no symptoms aoart from lump in my collarbone hollow. Yes we all feel like our lives have come to a stop it’s the fear of the unknown and the word cancer. But as Dani says our cancers are eminently curable treatment isn’t easy but it’s doable.
As for driving it’s best to have a back up plan first few weeks are usually not too bad but ….. we are all different. Maybe ask if hospital offers patient transfer service as well

Once you’ve seen oncologist things to fall into place. Many of us on here are still around so any questions just ask.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Debz. I had the standard 6 weeks of RT to my neck plus 5x chemo, and I too had a 45 minute drive to the hospital. My wife always came with me, even though she wasn’t allowed in the hospital due to lockdown.  Of course we are all different, but for what it’s worth I managed to drive myself to treatment right up until the last few days - and that was only because my neck was so sore from the RT that I couldn’t fully turn my head so I wasn’t safe. But if you’re in doubt hospitals do run transport schemes largely based on volunteer drivers so do check that out well in advance.

Wishing you the very best. It’s a long haul but it’s worth it! M

  • thanks for replying , this is reassuring to hear , we do have people to rely on if need be ,this group is certainly helping me alot

  • thanks , well done on your recovery  ,its so reassuring to know there is so many positive outcomes from this horrible disease, my partner is hating the word cancer , he said everytime he has to say it its like it smacks him in the face lol

  • Hi Thank you. Your husband will get there just don’t look too far ahead take it day by day. As we’ve said  our type of cancer is eminently curable.
Aby question s just ask or if you need to rant pop on. Someone will always get back to you. Maybe not late at night but during the day.
Keep off Dr Google there is  some  good advise but you really need to know where to look as there’s lots of  wrong information. Stick with your team or us on here

Theres a tried and trusted path your hubby will be going down. Teeth examined mask made ct scan with contrast maybe a pet ct scan then the planning  will be done snd treatment will start. Before you know it recovery will be underway.
