Hi everyone I've just found this excellent forum,  I have cancer at the base of the tongue I was diagnosed in February had 6 weeks of radio and only managed 2 of 6 of cisplatin due to adverse reactions to it. I finished treatment end of April,  I am managing little bits of food now and have lost 4.5 stones in weight. I Hope everyone is coping well with the treatments X

  • Welcome Kazz. Well done on finishing the treatment don’t worry about the missed chemo it’s the RT that’s the main thing.
I had base of tongue cancer too and finished treatment in January 2019. I’m pretty ok. Just a little reduction in saliva which is perfectly manageable but has left me with a lifelong obsession with oral hygiene and a large preventative dentist bill JoyJoy

You are still very early in your recovery but you are doing very well in managing to eat a little.
    How are you in yourself?

I hope you’re being well looked after. That’s a heck of a lot of weight to lose. I lost 5lb during treatment ( My dieticians were merciless) and maybe the same again afterwards. I found I could eat anything for 18 months then the weight started to creep up. It was a bit if a shock!

  • Hi Dani I'm not too bad in myself thanks some days are better than others as you well know,  well done on your recovery but not so good with your obsession and large dentist bill. The cancer treatments really are gruelling aren't they? But onwards and upwards now! I have my scan on Friday to see if it's worked fingers crossed it has. X

  • Yes am being looked after by the dietician she is great but obviously not happy with the weight loss, did you have a peg fitted? I have and have feed and meds That go through it daily. I'm going to my nieces wedding in November to mauritius so I'm hoping to have the peg removed for that.

  • Hi Jazz Welcome from me as well. As Dani says don’t worry about the chemo I had 2 of a planned 3 and am almost 4 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes and happily living my life.
I lost a few pounds during treatment my dieticians were relentless as well after treatment I lost a further stone I had n g tube fitted week 3 and out week 3 of recovery. Continue with the eating you’ll get there.

  • Hi Rachel thank you for your positive words they really help Blush  X

  • , did you have a peg fitted? I have and have feed and meds That go through it daily.

Hi Kazz. Stomach tubes weren’t my hospitals usual procedure. You got a feeding tube if you couldn’t swallow.  I had an NG tube for 8 weeks.
They won’t take your PEG out till you are eating and maintaining your weight so that’s something to aim for.
I hope you get to the wedding PEG free. Mauritius is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit.

  • I have recently joined group and posted about my diagnosis (search title is Tongue Cancer diagnosis) and have opted for treatment of radio therapy. May I ask in your case was surgery offered and did you decline to have it ? Yorkieman

  • (search title is Tongue Cancer diagnosis)

Hi Yorkieman. That’s why it’s useful to put a synopsis in your profile. Then people can check to tailor their reply.
Only if you want to though.
