My ex partner has been diagnosed with tonsil cancer and it is also in his lymph nodes in his neck. He has just had radical chemotherapy and has to have radiochemotherapy for 6 weeks. He is struggling to eat and I am afraid of what is to come next. Information is not very easy to obtain.

  • Hi Patti. Sorry to hear your news. Your Ex’s story seems to be a little different to the usual radiotherapy or chemoradiation that we encounter here. If you’re up to it let us know a little more. What drugs has he had and what stage is his cancer.
I had just radiotherapy but no prior chemotherapy at all but I can honestly say that RT is a very challenging treatment but manageable and you’re through it in no time. Recovery is different for all of us.

If you are not getting any sense out of his team please give the Macmillan helpline a ring. They will be very helpful. The phone number is at the end of my post.
in addition you can get in contact with The Swallows Head and Neck Cancer Charity. Their helpline is manned by a human being 24hrs a day. They are exceptionally strong in looking after carers. https://theswallows.org.uk/
Stsy with us and we’ll help where we can.

Thanks for the info.  He will be fitted with a peg but not sure when this will be. When he came out of hospital the ward had messed up his medication and the district nurse had to ring the ward as she couldn't understand it. I will get a list of the medication he was given. It all feels chaotic at the moment.

I'm not sure what stage his cancer is as when I asked they wouldn't tell me. I do have the report from the consultant but still can't decipher what stage it is. Possibly 3. 8 just feel so low with it all and alone.

  • Hi Patti, please try not to feel alone, we are all here to listen to your worries, and to help you through all this. Once his treatment is under way you will both feel better about it all. It's really good that he is having a PEG, it will take the worry out of not eating, my RIG was a life saver for me. Please ask away on here anything that is worring you or anything you need to know, someone will always come back to help if they can. All the best to you both.

    Regards Ray.
