Hi. My husband this week has been given diagnosis of throat cancer at the base of the tongue and has spread into a couple of lymph nodes. I'm beside myself. He in his 50s fit but not that healthy. He smokes so obvs been told to pack in to have the best outcome. He is trying but it's very hard to go cold turkey..is it OK to get a vape? Is that putting something else into the mix? But he needs somethg to help him quit..he's a heavy smoker.. Is it best to have tablets or patches from the doctor? He is very slim build, doesn't eat regular meals mainly because of work pattern. I want to help build him up as much as possible for this battle..what can I do? What is the best foods, drinks, vitamins etc to build his strength and give him. Any advice from anyone greatly appreciated I am beside myself with fear.. we don't know anything else yet, hope and prey its not spread. Thinking of you all too. I'm so sorry you are all going through this..
Hi Kathleen1 Welcome to the group, getting the diagnosis is very scary and worrying. However once all the testing is done and he gets his treatment plan, I'm sure you will both feel a bit easier about it all. As far as the smoking he really would be better if he does pack it in, as hard as it is, I know I was a smoker for many years, but managed to quit 28 years ago. As for building himself up, this is a must, so he can afford to lose some wait during treatment, which most people do. Eating anything and everything that puts weight on, food which is high in calories, adding cream or butter to foods where you can, etc. All the best to you both.
Regards Ray.
Hi Kathleen 1As an ex smoker albeit only socially over 30 years ago I wouldn’t go down the cape route. Get him to go to drs as I’ve bern through treatment snd no wat woujd I have bern able to smoke. He needs patches to wean off sooner reTher than later. The treatment isn’t east and he needs a regular diet from now on. He will have a dietician but to start with regular foods if possible think calories. As for working it’s rare then any of us manage to keep working through treatment especially if he’s a manual worker. Add double cream extra butter to everythjng.

Hi, Welcome to the group
I was a heavy smoker right upto my operation, don’t know how I did it but did go cold turkey as the thought of cigarette and how I was going to smoke via a stoma was the convincing part, even though the Consultants said it was possibly more likely to have been the chemicals used in dry cleaning for many years that I worked in the industry. Have you discussed he goes to the stop smoking support, my wife went and it worked for her and the patches or what ever they give you is on prescription.
As for food he needs as others have said to build his weight up, with the 2 cancers I have had in the last 2 years I lost 12kgs, I am now able to eat most anything and it’s don’t think healthily think calories more and more, as others have said anything cream and loaded with fat, I eat cheese, cream, full fat milk, chocolate puddings and honey on Weetabix, my wife can’t believe what I put away at times but I am now ½ way regained, the other thing if he has irregular patterns perhaps high calorie shakes are easier to use.
I would also speak with the Food Police (Dieticians !) in the hospital they will help with diets for weight gain and you will need them after because he will most likely be on soft or liquid diets.
Hope you and your Husband get on Ok and do come back if you want help, someone will be there with info

Hi Kathleen. Great advice from everyone on here so far. The smoking issue is important as continuing can make the treatment less effective and increase the chances of recurrence. Your husbands team will no doubt have discussed this with him and because he will be a priority he should have access to quitting therapies from his GP. Keep nagging.
As for building him up the internet is awash with recipes for smoothies that really pack on the weight. One of the best additions is peanut butter I found but you have to add it slowly while the blender is going. You can also get weight building protein powders.
Best of luck.
