My Dad has neck cancer . He’s receiving proton beam therapy but is experiencing nasty side effects. He also suffered a TIA last week. He is back home now. He is finding eating and drinking difficult as his tongue is really stiff and the skin under his neck is so painful and is restricting head movement.

  • Hi verbena. Sorry to hear about your dad.
Just make sure his team knows how bad he’s feeling. I’m afraid these side effects are largely unavoidable for a lot of people but they can be eased.
How far along is he and where is he being treated ?

  • Are you getting support from his GP? And has your father a feeding tube? That would make life much easier for him.

  • Thank you Beesuit. I have now emailed his team  with my concerns. He was diagnosed in early March and was scheduled for surgery but it was changed to radiotherapy. Next week sees the start of another 4 days of treatment, although he has a consultation this week to see what’s happening. He’s receiving palliative therapy.

  • Thank you for replying. Dad’s in Scotland and receiving treatment at Ninewells, Dundee. I will ask about the feeding tube as that now may be needed.

  • HubYes it’s not unusual for the majority if us to have a feeding tube at some point. I wasn’t aware ninewells in Dundee had a proton beam machine has he been travelling to Manchester for it ?
Hope something gets resolved for him.

  • He’s receiving palliative therapy.

Do you mean the doctors can’t cure him but can treat him? In which case there should be a whole palliative team including your GP to support you all. Do ask his team at Ninewells to start this up if they haven’t already.

There is a Maggie’s at the hospital. You might find that useful to help you all cope too.
Have a look at their website.

Let us know how you get on and a big hug to your Dad.
