That cancer and voice

Hi I've had throat cancer and had 4wks radiotherapy plus had the all clear. But my voice is very croaky at times. I am worried about not being able to make myself understood and also I am a carer so I'm worried about my clients not understanding me. They need me to speak loudly most of the time.

In a couple of weeks I will have been off work a year and it does worry me being off so long.

Can anyone relate to this and offer me advice?

  • Hi Kaye and welcome.  I only had surgery so can't really comment, but as nobody else has posted on your thread I thought I would to push it back up to the top and hopefully someone will see it soon.

  • Hi Kaye

where was your cancer mine was tonsillar butbstill classed as throat area.  my voice wasn’t really affected. I had 35 radiotherapy and 2 chemo. You should still be having regular check ups with ent consultants have yiu been scoped ?If you are concerned maybe a telephone call to them. Have you seen a speech therapist?

    Hi Kaye

RT can cause permanent damage so it might be a case of learning how to speak clearly again. Have a word with your CNS to see if you can get an appointment with your speech and language team to help you.

  • Hi Peter thanks for your reply. I didn't know that

  • Hi Hazel cancer was on vocal chords. Had 20 radiotherapy. All gone and yes regular checks 3 monthly at moment.. All happy with my progress eventho I have told them my concerns

    1. Hi thanks for your reply. I have spoken to cns and everyone is happy with everything. I suppose I am worried because as the surgeon said it's early days.
  • That’s good news. It’s probably the RT and improvement continues for a couple of years.
