Hello,
I'm new here, new to the possibility of having cancer myself. My mother passed from Breast Cancer 10+ years ago now, and whilst it was always at the back of my head that because of that. Macmillan supported me as a teenager so it's the first place I thought of coming for advice.
I have two/three growths on the back wall of my throat towards my nose. I also suffer with severe oesophagal reflux and had a episode in which these growths were very swollen, bleeding and blocking my airways. The GP issued an urgent referral regarding growths. From googling (I know I shouldn't!) and the placement I have assumed it's placed for Nasopharyngeal Cancer. I have some questions about the referral appointment if anyone can help to ease my worries.
- Would the consultant know it was cancer from looking at the growths?
- Would they do Biopsies at the initial appointment? And if so - how do they biopsy that area of the throat?
- Does anyone else experience any gastrointestinal issues alongside throat issues?
Thanks for reading if you got this far!
Emma
Hi Emma and welcome to the forum.
I was diagnosed with base of tongue cancer in May 2018 and finished treatment in Ausgust that year.
From my own experience, the ENT guy initially used a nasoendoscope to examine my throat as there were no visible signs that could be seen, just my feeling of something not right in my throat and a weird voice. After the initial examination I was given an appt at the hospital to go in as a day patient for a biopsy under general anaesthetic. I think a biopsy is fairly normal procedure before any diagnosis so they can deduce exactly what any lump etc is.
Gastrointestinal issues are classics for causing all sorts of problems with the throat. Glad your GP has referred you for a proper examination so your lumps can be expertly assessed and treated. Fingers crossed that they turn out to be benign.
Do let us know how you get on Emma.
All the best.

Thank you for your reply Linda. My mother was a Lynda too (although god forbid you ever spelt it with an 'i' )
My initial GP appointment was more to do with the gastrointestinal issues as these have plagued me for years and I'm only 32! But have been aware of these throat lumps for some time. She was initial going to refer me to gastroenterology before seeing these lumps. I'm hoping for a positive outcome, but I cannot help but panic, so thank you for easing my worries with the process
Hi Emma. Please keep off dr Google for starters , that was best advise my oncologist gave me,yiu will frighten yourself unless you know exactly where to look. Everything else is generalisation and often way out of date information. Sorry to hear you lost your mum from breast cancer,
My experience was first ent appointment I had a fine needle biopsy which was sent away for analysis, although unknown to be my g p was sure I had head and neck cancer from my lump in collar bone, How it was presenting. The following week results were in Squamous cancer cells were present so I then had the scope and was booked in for biopsy to try to determine where the cancer was turned out to be tonsillar. I had no other symptoms, although treatment has given me acid reflux.
The quickest way to be seen is the 14 day cancer pathway remember i we 90% of referrals aren’t cancer, fingers x yours aren’t.
The waiting time is by far the worst easy to say try not to worry but try to keep busy.
Pop on when Ĺ·ouve been seen hopefully you won’t need us.

Thank you for your reply Hazel, it's really helpful.
Dr Google is the worst, and I know this, but still couldn't help myself! I'm my own worst enemy. Yes I'm on the 2 week referral and have received my appointment for next Thursday Morning. Big coincidence but the ENT I'm seeing is actually a family friend, so that's eased my mind a little knowing it's him! I'll keep you updated.
Hope you are well. X
Hi Emma. That’s good your appointment has come through even better you know the consultant so that’s less stress for you. Promise to keep off Dr Google next Thursday will soon be here.
I am very well thank you my cancer was curable so will take that as so many aren’t.
A few long term side effects but am happily living my life.
