Morning, so my radiotherapy finished on Friday (soft palate and neck) and since then I’ve felt quite poorly. Pain in my throat with swallowing and if I take a deep breath in. I was like this 3 weeks ago and was admitted for a feeding tube and they started me on steroids for the inflammation. The steroids stopped last week also. So I’m guessing ithe inflammation has returned as expected. I’m on cocodamol and oramorph which helps but has no benefit at all when I swallow. It’ only lasts a moment I suppose the pain but it’s excruciating. I’ve got local anaesthetic syrup to swallow but the pain remains. Its very debilitating :(
my neck is so sore too, very red and peeling. I’ve got flamazine cream.
I have the NG tube but after vomiting the other day I think it’s moved as I can’t aspirate anything. I had a hot chocolate last night prior to starting the feed and I tried to aspirate, nothing?? I shouldn’t have started the feed really but I did . anyone recommend anything else for the swallowing pain, it’s like swallowing glass chards. What about the aspirates, anyone else struggle to get aspirates??
thank you everyone xx
I always struggled to aspirate but I reckoned that if the feed didn’t come back up it was ok. Putting 10ml or so of warm water down the tube before trying to aspirate usually did it though
Local anaesthetic gargle is about the best you can get. You could try doing the same with oramorph.
It is painful. You can’t eliminate the swallowing discomfort entirely but it will get better. My tube was out after four weeks but swallowing was still painful and I relied on morphine for quite some some.
The Flamazine should sort your neck pretty quickly. Just hang on.

Of course if you are worried about the position of the tube I’d contact your CNS to see if the hospital needs to check it.

Hi Elaine what you’re feeling us lijke Dani said what we all felt after treatment the radiotherapy is at its peak nothing will really make it better I curled up in bed and slept a lot watched trashy tv. I couldn’t even read.. I used to get Hubby to put warm water through tube if I couldn’t aspirate it. But if you feel it’s moved contact c n s. I was on oramorph for at least 10 weeks along with co codomol. Our treatment is pretty brutal to say the least
It does take time. I thought I would never eat again.

Elaine. If you can swallow the supplements then get rid of the tube would be whst I would do. I vomited up my tube twice. Both times I pulled it out of my nose to finish the job. The first time I had it replaced the second time I didn’t bother.
Swallowing glass is just what it is. I looked into my throat at the end of treatment ( too scared before) and I was quite shocked at what I saw. We heal though and usually very well.

Thanks Dani and Hazel
i can’t open my mouth wide enough to see the back of my throat. I can see the side of my tongue though and looks awful sloughy broken down mess. Like you say, I’m also scared to look! Been too painful to talk today. So I’ve been started on pregablin to go with oramorph and cocodamol. I also had a nurse visit who pulled back my ng as it had migrated further in by about 5-6 cm!! I can aspirate it now. So yeah, I’ll keep popping the drugs, chilling with Netflix and in time, as you both say, it will improve.
was advised by the nurse to try manuka honey and hot water to drink. Hot fluids seem to be quite comforting. Tends to be tea and hot chocolate. So I’ve ordered some manuka to try. She said as well as soothing has antiseptic properties? Let’s hope it tastes ok
thanks again ladies

Hi Dani and hazel
may sound daft but ever tried bonjela on the mouth lesions??? Can’t seem to get on top on pain and I wondered ?? Thanks x
Hi Elaine I can use bonjela niw but wouldn’t have even dare to try it for first 2 years. I was prescribed gelclair it’s quite expensive e about £70 for a weeks supply but my oncologist insisted my g p prescribe if. I still get it now as ulcers can pop up admittedly I get one box a year now.
have you tried rinsing with lukewarm water salt snd baking piercer 1/2teaspoon to a litre of Luke warm water. Gargle with soluble aspirin rinse and spit ? Don’t swallow it.
there’s something Amazon sell alclair I’ve used that as well but not early on in treatment. I had an ulcer the full length of my tongue for at least 10 weeks.
Please be careful with bonjela it stings even now but I can cope Have you checked you’ve not got oral thrush ?
