Hi
looking for any tips on food and drink.
I’m 5 weeks into radiotherapy and have NG tube, feeding overnight. I really want to eat and drink but struggling with pretty much all food. Hot chocolate is the only thing that goes down well. Fizzy drinks I can’t manage, nothing citrus, everything tastes foul. I’m wasting so much stuff as I think, ooh I’ll try that but once it’s in my mouth that’s it-done! Thanks
Hi Elaine sadly at 5 weeks it’s par for the course. I was n g fed totally from end if week 3 . At the most is coukd sip flat Diet Coke or sip bittkes water. It’s wasn’t worth the effort and pain to try and eat. Use your tube lIf anything soggy weetabix and I mean soggy. Half of ine took me 45 min in the end I stopped trying as it wasn’t worth the effort. Rely on n g tube that’s why you’ve had it fitted.
yiu need calories so that’s the best way of getting them all mine plus water and meds came via that.
Remember it’s not forever, as for wasting food that can go in for a good while .my hubby put 2 stone on eating my leftovers he’s a Yorkshire lad doesn’t do waste !

Have you tried yogurt, ice cream , mashed potatoes with butter and/or cheese.Soft cereals like weettabix…porridge with golden syrup or honey
At this stage you need small meals with lots of calories. To be honest it’s going to be trial and error to find what is palatable but you are nearly at the end now so keep going.
WIshing you all the best x
Thanks Hazel
i keep thinking what’s the point trying it’s just so abnormal isn’t it, not eating yet soul destroying at the same time.
I put a stone on in weight in 2 weeks with my ng feed. Still waiting for dietician to call to discuss!! I reduced my feed from 2000cal to 1500 cal because of the increased weight and I thought I’d have spare calories to add in bits of food, its just all unpalatable xx
Hi Elaine. Because if the pain our mouths and throat endure it’s really hard to even try to swallow water.I took the attitude the n g tube was there for a reason to keep me alive. The sheer pain of trying to eat ti be honest wasn’t worth it. 3 weeks into recovery I took the decision to start to maintain my own feeding schedule .Dont stress about trying to get a few 100 calories in. Many other cancer suffers can continue to eat but head and neck patients have their own issues. Use the feeding tube please . There’s time for you to start introducing food when treatment finishes .Yes eating us such a social pleasure that’s denied to us for a while but it’s worth it in the end,

Elaine...try some proper honey which has a bite to it. PM me your address and I'll send you a jar.
I found porridge a little difficult at first but semolina hit the spot.
Add full fat Philly to scrambled egg. It makes it creamier and softer.
BUT the others are right. Everything is going to taste rubbish for a while so if you find something you can manage just get it down.
If not then use your feeding tube and forget eating for a while
