My husband was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsil and 2 adjacent lymph nodes. He was operated on last September. He started 33 sessions of radiotherapy on the 20th December combined with 5 once a week sessions of chemotherapy. By the time he finished he was unable to eat and very dehydrated. He was prescribed nightly drip of glucose, sodium and potassium. Nurses came in night and morning (we live in France) and this continued for 5 weeks. He had the mucus problem and very dry mouth. He managed to sip water and high protein drinks and eventually managed to eat a little. After 4 weeks it was suggested that he had a feeding tube but he refused! He is now very much improved and has gained a little weight (he lost 14kilos) but eating is still a great problem. He still has 2 high protein drinks a day and I am trying to feed him little and often. It’s a struggle as some days he can manage something and then other days he can’t. What is the timescale for getting back to a normal eating pattern or will this never happen?
Hi River. Sorry your husband has had such a struggle. Generally we are told that the better nourished we are and the less weight we lose the faster our recovery.
I had an NG tube in by week 4 and list very little.
What we tend to find here is that folk are beginning to eat soft foods by 6 weeks and have definitely turned a corner at 12
I could eat well at six months though taste remained a problem for well past a year
But everybody is different. It’s a slow journey and improvements continue past two years.
Do you have access to good replacement drinks? Your husband is going to need 3K Calories a day.
If not make shakes with fruit ice cream and peanut butter. Add cream butter and eggs to everything.
Ih and be rigorous about oral hygeine
He will get there. Just at his own pace a day at a time sometimes backwards but he will get there.

Hi River3
please trust things will improve. I am 6 months from RT snd can eat most things (with water). I was very down in the early weeks as I had a lot of pain and nausea but at 4 months things got a lot lot better. I still have very dry mouth do always need water to eat and sometimes I still feel a bit sicky but on the whole it’s not too bad at all. I wish your husband well and sending you all best wishes.
