Hi All
My husband had a neck lump for a few months and after much nagging from me - he started this journey at the beginning of this year.
He has had:
2 x Neck Ultrasound
2 x MRI with contrast
1 x neck biopsy
1 x MRI
1 x PET Scan
At first, they thought the neck lump was a Branchial Cyst. Due to his age (61) and with the PET scan showing FDG avidity in a tonsil and some lymph nodes - they decided to do a tonsillectomy and a panendoscopy on 18/3/22. The biopsy from the tonsils came back negative. A conservative neck dissection was done 25/3/22.
Appointment with MDT team 7/4/22 - they confirmed the lump was secondary cancer and HPV+ positive - but no cancer in the lymph nodes they removed. They are not sure but think the primary is at the very back and base of his tongue
He seen the maxillofacial dentist the same day - x-rays done and full check-up. The dentist explained what radiation treatment does to the mouth and that he will be under his care for 18-24 months.
The consultant then booked him to have TORS (transoral robotic surgery) to try and locate the primary - this is being done on 20/4/22. They explained that they want to find the primary before doing the treatment plan as if they can locate the primary then the radiation treatment will be less and more targeted otherwise the full neck will be treated. No mention of chemotherapy.
I would love to hear if anyone else has experienced - or knows of anyone who has had a similar diagnosis as my husband.
Written with a very heavy heart but staying positive as I know the journey is long...

Hi Jackie and welcome to the forum where you'll receive lots of support and advice should you require it.
As Dani says, Peter was in very similar shoes as your husband (as have several other people) and is sure to to respond.
I was diagnosed with base of tongue cancer in May 2018 and had robotic surgery to remove the tumour plus a neck dissection followed 6 weeks later with radiotherapy.
All the best.

Jackie - hello and welcome from me. Happy to answer any questions you may have. I was diagnosed in Nov 19 and I am still here. Very much alive and kicking!! If you would rather then private message me for a chat. Whatever they find I am sure he will receive the best care and you will both go on to enjoy life together, but I do understand this is a most worrying time right now.
Hi Hazel
Thanks for taking the time to reply - I have read and digested all your blog and posts and found it very
cathartic
I have found the Macmillian site a good point of reference
Thanks again
Jackie
Hi Dani
Thanks for the reply - I have read all your posts and your blog and have found it very informative. I will contact Peter as it looks like he has had a very similar experience to my husband.
Unfortunately my husband doesn’t want to read or look at anything to do with the prognosis – I am a believer in forewarned – forearmed.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply - I am trying to circumnavigate all the information - and process it.
Jackie
Hi Jackie You’re welcome any questions just ask. I too like to me forewarns and needed to know. Hence the blog was my way of controlling at least a little bit of something. Now it’s helping others even better .
