It’s worth remembering that around 90% of 2ww referrals aren’t actually cancer. But it is always sensible to get something checked.

The second thing is that even if it is cancer, head and neck cancers have a very good success rate when treated.

Having said that, uncertainty is horrible and we do tend to imagine the worst.

Hopefully you are fine, but let us know how your examination goes whatever the outcome.

Thank you so much Cathy I keep trying not to imagine the worst I worked in ent for a good while and I know a lot of 2w refs are not cancer but it's scary anyway

  • Hi The 2 week cancer pathway is the fastest way of being seen ,like Cathy  has said over 90% of referrals turn out not to be cancer. But if you’re like me in the 10% that are take heart that treatment of orapharangeal   cancers are eminently curable. Please please keep off dr Google it’s the worst thing yiu can do. You’ve found us in here stuck with us and ask questions Hazel

As you know from working in e n t there’s so many variables

Oh Hazel you've battled yourself so you know but also know the waiting is hellish  many thanks for your kind words I'm worst in the night when I can't sleep but hearing from people like yourself helps so much

  • Hi Tracie. Just keep off dr Google like my oncologist said to me he could diagnose himself dead by spending 5 mins on there. Just keep in forefront of yiur mind that lots of us in here have gone through treatment and come out the other side a but battered and bruised but we’ve done it. . I have ti agree the fear if the unknown in this the waiting period is by far the worst. I have been there got the t shirt etc and agree nighttime the brain goes into overdrive .

  • Hi Tracie. I'll just add to what others have said. Don't try to find the answer on Google. I know how it works. You search and search for an answer to tell you you don't have cancer but all you find is worse and worse till you run yourself insane. Truthfully though I'm no doctor but a survivor of tounge cancer it really doesn't sound a  classic presentation. Your GP doesn't know, which is why you are being sent quickly. 90% + referrals are not cancer. If you are in a heck of a tizzy and can't sleep ask your GP for some mild sleeping tablets.

Everything is out of your control at this stage so try to keep busy as there is nothing you can do. I hope you don't need us and that your appointment comes through quickly

    Best wishes
