Possible throat cancer?

Hi I’m new just scrolling through and thought I would post for some advice or opinions

i first visited doctors in October for persistent sore throat and feeling of a lump on right side he referred me to ENT who asked a few questions and felt the area he did feel swelling but said it seemed fine to make sure he had a look with the camera up the nose he took a few pictures and told me that he would need to run a few tests to see if I had acid reflux or something going on and sent me off to get bloods taken

the next day I got telephone call to go down for MRI scan with contrast then the next week a CT scan with contrast then I went back to see him in December he told me that there were a few nodules at the base of my tongue that he wanted to have a closer look at but it was nothing to worry about so on Saturday I was booked in and had a panendscopy day procedure and whilst I was in recovery the surgeon came and said that there was a lot of mucus had to be drained away and they took a few biopsies and I should hear from them in 2 weeks.
My throat has been extremely painful for months feels very inflamed and voice is hoarse I always speak now as if I have a cold, I have constant ear infections and both my ears would leak fluid, I find it hard to drink fluid feel that I can only take sips and whilst I was in hospital on Saturday I was looking at my notes and the picture taken from the nasal camera looked really bumpy!
j suppose I’m wondering does this sound like procedures to diagnose throat cancer or could this still be something like acid reflux I would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced similar and your diagnosis

thanks x

  • Thank you I wish your mum all the best x

  • Radioactiveraz that’s what I was thinking if it was that suspicious they would have maybe been quicker between appointments

I should have also added that in 2017 I had lumpectomy for papilloma in right breast

  • Hi My experience was 2 week pathway then 2 weeks later biopsy results 5 days later oncologist 3 days after that. Fingers x all ok for you. Remember over 90% of referrals aren’t cancer.

  • Hi Amber and welcome to the community

I can understand why you are rattled. You've had a lot of tests. Did you ask whether they were looking for cancer?

All the investigations would indeed find cancer but similarly they might be finding nothing of note and doing a sequence of tests each coming up with nothing. The tests have been going on for 4 months which really doesn't seem urgent to me. I have in the past suffered from LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux) which presents as upper airway dysfunction...sore throat, hoarse voice, post nasal drip and it really is difficult to diagnose. It's basically silent reflux.

Waiting is pants...but all you can do is keep busy. Don't bother with google, you'll frighten yourself to death with inaccurate alarming information. Leave it to the experts and come back if you need us...hopefully you won't
