Hi there, new to this.

I was diagnosed with tongue and, possibly, throat cancer two weeks ago. Since then I have had a biopsy and, last week, a CT Scan. I received a call from the hospital yesterday, asking if I was aware of my appointment for MRI Scan on 21st Feb? I wasn't. Nurse went on to tell me that it had been called by my ENT Consultant?

I have an appointment with my consultant tomorrow afternoon, when I presume that I will get the results of the biopsy, CT Scan and then establish what the way forward is. Should I be concerned that the MRI scan is cancelled?

Lastly, if I am to undergo surgery/chemotherapy, do they give you a time span to prepare? I would to sort out my work, sickness cover, etc?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Obviously I am very concerned but trying my best to remain upbeat. I appreciate any advice.

  • Hi and welcome to the group.  Lots of experienced people on here that will offer advice as to how to cope as you move through treatment.  It may be that the MRI is not needed at this stage with the information the biopsy and CT have given your consultant.  The CT scan sees objects in the order of 5mm in size and the MRI around 1mm.  If your cancer is showing in the CT then probably no need for the MRI at this stage.

Your treatment plan is entirely up to you.  Clearly the hospital will want to progress ASAP, but generally with these cancers there is not a sudden deterioration in your prognosis.  I was diagnosed with my cancer 2 days before I was flying out to the USA for 3 1/2 weeks holiday.   I still went and then further delayed treatment by a couple of weeks so I could have a "good Christmas" .  Two and a bit years later I am still here!

You are very sensible to take time to prepare.  The treatment is tough and it may take some time before you feel able to go back to work.  You will need someone able to run you to and from hospital and care for you when you are at low points.  The good thing is that our cancers do respond well to treatment and the vast majority of us go on to have a, different, but good quality of life.

Once you have more information about what the plan is pop back on and we can tell you what our experiences were like and how best to prepare.

Thank you for that kind and positive response. This has reassured me so much. Just fingers crossed for tomorrow now. Thank you again.

  • Hi Mossend and welcome. I wouldn't worry too much about time scales. Once you have your diagnosis tomorrow the next step will be to have a planning CT if you are having radiotherapy. Treatment is all computer planned these days but nevertheless it needs input from the radiologists and will all take time. You'll likely have two weeks or a month before your treatment starts. Hopefully that is ample time to get things sorted. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Let us know how you get on

  • Hi Mossend. Welcome from me to the club none if us wanted to join but here we are. As tigers have said there’s a tried and trusted routine and it doesn’t happen all at in e. So you will have time to prepare, yhe radiotherapy takes time to plan , yiu will need a mask making and a planning Ct ,Plus you  have 6 weeks radiotherapy that needs to be slotted into the hospitals plans. They will only have a certain number of machines that your timescale will have to be fitted in with others.

    Hope this helps Hazel
