Hi all,

I'm new here and it was suggested to me by a champion that I should pop a post here, so here I am.

My story isn't one of cancer yet, but it could be soon. Just this week I found a lump on the inside of my jaw, which has been checked by a doctor at my pg. She doesn't think it's serious but I'm off for an ultrasound this Sunday and giving bloods for testing on Monday. But it's scaring me something awful, and whilst trying to find out more information online (yes I know, probably the worst idea when your panicking already) but I was hoping to find answers as to why other things feel how they do, like my muscles are aching, joints and having mild head aches. It all seems to come back to one thing, hence why I'm here.

Today I've felt a little better mentally at least after posting for the first time last night, maybe it's knowing that I'm not alone and there's people out there who can help, even if it's just talking with someone. I known haven't gone into great details about how feeling physically or mentally but I'm hoping someone knows what it feels like and if your here it would great to hear from you.

Thanks in advance, Slight smile

  • Hi Coops. Welcome to our group hopefully you won’t need us. First info keep off DR Google you’ve scared yourself already it won’t help you. Over 90 % of lumps and bumps aren’t cancer. I was in the unlucky l 10 %. There’s plenty of reasons for your limo not to be cancer so please don’t jump to that conclusion. Personally my cancer had no symptoms I had no headaches aches etc I was the fittest i had ever been. Sundays not far away so try to keep busy  . Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Coop and welcome. When we imagine we might have cancer the brain does all sorts of weird stuff and things that we were unaware of before suddenly a problem. Aches and pains are typical of worry...it's likely stress. At least you are being investigated. Most neck lumps are not cancer.

I'm three years down the line and even now I have the odd hiccup and my mind goes into overdrive. A psychologist friend once said to me that if you can sit, concentrate and make your little finger ache when previously it didn't you are prime worrier. I tried it and I can. So I understand how you feel.

Get the tests done but one thing I might urge you is that if they are inconclusive I'd be asking for an ENT referral. Like Hazel says, over 90% of swellings aren't cancer but best be sure.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

  • Hi Coops86 and a warm welcome from me.  Hazel and Dani have said it all.  The chances are it is not cancer and if it is then there are really high probabilities of a complete cure for most head and neck cancers.  Waiting is cruel, but we have to wait so that the right tests can be completed (they take time and there is no way to speed them up) and correct clinical decisions made.  I remember well when I was in the same situation as you 27 months ago.  Stay with us!

  • I had a lump/lesion on my lower jaw (mandible) that did turn out to be cancerous. I didn’t have any muscle aches or headaches, but the lump itself did become painful.

As others point out above, the majority of suspect lumps/lesions referred on the 2 week pathway urgently as suspected cancer turn out to be quite innocent.

I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to worry. You are doing the right thing getting checked.

    Hi Hazel,

Thank you for the welcome, I hope so too (sorry I wrote this message out the night you commentedand and I thought I'd hit the reply button but I guess I didn't lol). But its good to know that this is somewhere I and others can come to talk and if it turns out I'm clear, maybe I can help someone like me too.

I know, Dr google definitely doesn't help, but I was just looking for some hope I guess that it was maybe something else going on.

Is it really a 90-10% with lumps, I didn't realise this was so. My main reason for being so concerned is that I used to smoke (17years on and off) up until the start of this year and I wouldn't say that I'm the fittest either really. Also the day after I had it checked my face had become swollen and sore just behind the lump, but it's already gone down and less painful now.

I've got some things planned for the weekend which should help keep my mind off of it hopefully.

I will post again when I know more

    Thanks Hazel

P.S I'm sorry to hear that you were in the 10%, I can't begin to imaging what or how it must feel like to be given this news. But I'm grateful to know that your doing ok simply because you've helped me feel some what better already. I'll give your blog a read soon also, thanks again.

  • Hi No worries we’ve all written posts then not hit send at some point. Pop back in when you’ve got your results Hopefully you  won’t need us if you do we are here.

I'd also like to say hi and a thank you too everyone else who has commented. I don't want you all to think that I'm ignoring your lovely comments but I was just trying not to think about it as much, but I did read your comments and they helped greatly.

I've had a bit of a dip mentally tonight so to help I came back on read them again and to say thank you for taking the time to comment on my post. I'm hoping to get my results back next week and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The waiting is hard though and I'm not always able to keep my mind off it just now with work and a poor mobile signal but I'm trying my best, it's also helping just knowing that there is this community to reach out to if I need too,

    So thank you again Grinning
