Hi,

Happy new year everyone.

A few days ago I got the result of a biopsy that the growth on the side of my tongue was cancerous. It's small and the consultant says it'll just need a small section of my tongue being cut away.

That said I haven't had any scans done yet, CT scan booked for 8th Jan. He did a physical exam on my nodes but didn't find anything of concern.

Thoughts and emotions - I'm up and down like a YoYo. But reading the messages here is helping.

  • HimBrightKe . Best advise I can give you is please keep off Dr Google it will only scare yourself silly. What I did in the early stage was watch trashy tv to try and keep occupied .If your consultant has already said small and operation take his words to heart.  They can do marvellous things now , hearing the cancer word frightens us all .But there’s lots of us in her happily living our lives m me included. I am 3 years and 4 post post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes.pop back in when ever yiu need to someone will get back to you.

Thanks. Xmas time wasn't a great time to receive the news and it was also the day before my birthday but xmas/birthday/new year period has been a distraction.

  • Hi Bright. My neighbour has had exactly the same thing. A small tumour which the surgeons cut out and she’s fine. With a bit of luck that will be it.
Your consultant won’t lie to you so try to relax

Thank you Beesuit. This forum is a great help.

  • Hi BrightKe and welcome.

I had a tumour on the base of my tongue which was removed in May 2018.

Feeling up and down emotionally is totally understandable, especially while you're waiting for scans and results.  Once all these are in and you have a treatment plan you should feel less anxious.

You'll find lots of support  here from others who have been through similar.

Good luck with everything.  Let us know how you get on.

  • Hi BrightKe

Sounds a little like me, but I presented in a lymph node.  They chased mine for well over a year before finding a small tumour in my tongue.  Visual observation found it and it was confirmed by biopsy.  It has never shown up on the scans - so be prepared for yours not to show up, but they do know where it is.

They planned on taking a 5cm x 5cm section of tongue from me, reviewing the margins to see if I needed and radio post surgery.  In the end when they opened me up the cancer had (once again) gone so the surgery was abandoned.  I rejected and precautionary radio as there was no target.  At the moment they consider the cancer removed in my case.

These types of cancer can have all sorts of twists in their progression.  Almost certainly someone on here will have good experience of your treatment pathway once you have seen the consultant and can offer great advice as to how you can cope with it.

Waiting is a really difficult time, but in the next 2-3 weeks you should have a good idea of what they propose to do to cure you.  We're all here for you.

Yes, the waiting is something I'll have to get used to. Thanks Peter.
