Hello, my dad was diagnosed with a stage 4 mouth tumour in august. He had it removed about a month ago, this has involved the fibula flap and a facial reconstruction. He’s now having radiotherapy for 6 weeks.
He lives in the Philippines which is very hard and we’re trying our best to support him. I’d like to support more, I’m it quite sure how. I’ve read about the treatment etc etc but didn’t know if anyone that has known anyone or been through this themselves could offer him some ongoing advice etc?
Clearly it’s long days, travelling 5 days a week for treatment, he’s only on day 9. He’s very positive but I know he’s finding it tough. I told him he looked well yesterday but he said he felt far from it.
Particular things he’s mentioned recently & im not sure what others have experienced. He said when he woke the other morning he’s felt his mouth change like something has moved, that’s bothered him. With appointments, he won’t be able to ask about this till the end of the week. He’s also been prescribed Neurobion, from what I’ve googled it’s vit B to help nerve damage. He’s most concerned about this medication as he said it doesn’t have good write ups & he’s stopped taking it. From what I’ve read he’s ok to take it. It’s so much harder that he’s having to research things as it isn’t the same as the Uk.
thanks in advance xx
Hi I had chemo radiotherapy theres info on my blog about my experience.sorry can’t help with the neurobin it’s got to be hard being so far away. His mouth will feel strange the radiotherapy is aggressive and as each day passes it can get worse. Make sure he has proper pain relief I started on 30 mg co codomol but by week 3 was on oramorph as well . Tell him to keep well hydrated it dies hell I was on 2 litres of water a day minimum.
