  1. My husband has head and neck cancer and a spot on his lung. We were told last week that the chemo isn't working. There is another chemo he could try,  but the chances of that working are less than the previous one. I've been laying in bed tonight picturing his last moments of life, and wondering how I'm going to cope without him. He doesn't want to know how long he has left, and I don't know why I'm having these thoughts tonight. I really need to sleep.
  • Hi Mezzy. So sorry you are both in this situation. I'm not a doctor and can't offer any medical advice but it's always worth asking for a second opinion or whether your husband can join a trial. There are immunotherapy trials ongoing for which he might be suitable. Don't worry about upsetting his consultant. Second opinions are routine so go for it.

It's a bleak place to be but do reach out for support from your GP for a start. There is no need for you to do this alone. I know when I was diagnosed I never wanted to know how long I might have. That is not for my consultant to decide and it would only be a guess anyway.

Take this day by day but do plan for getting help.

I hope you can both find something to help you

    Best wishes

    Dani

Hi Beesuit, he's had immunotherapy, radiotherapy, two types of chemo, surgery, but nothing is helping. We have someone Fromm Macmillan coming to us this week. X

  • Oh Mezzy so sorry. Get as many people involved to help as you can. Of course you are going to think how horrid this might be but you have to look after yourself too. It might be an idea to explore hospice care to give you some rest too.

See your GP for yourself too, even if it’s just to get you some mild sleeping tablets to get you through the odd night.
You could also give The Swallows charity a ring. They have a 24 hour helpline and are particularly good at supporting carers

  • Can you please tell us a bit more of what kind of surgery he has already had. And if you dont mind about what age he is. When you say nothing is helping exactly what to do you mean. In other words what do you expect and what is not happening. Just know he has head and neck cancer without knowing where isnt enough. It is not that we are doctors but most of us on here have had something similar and can tell you more about it.

He had it under his tongue on the right side, had floor of mouth removed and replaced with cheek, over his jaw. Was in a controlled coma for 6 days. Had radiotherapy with chemo Cisplatin. Got over that, had stomach cancer, half stomach removed. Cancer came in left side of neck and mouth. Had lymph nodes removed both sides of neck. Treated with immunotherapy, just had 3 sessions of Cisplatin wth 5fu,, still not worked. His is 65 now and was diagnosed when 62.

  • Thanks

I am afraid that this is really too much. I hope others on here who have had something similar can help you. It seems that some of these things are cured. What exactly is left that isnt.

  • No words life isn't always kind just sending you best wishes and strength for what's ever to come take care x
