My husband has recently been diagnosed with base of tongue cancer, we know it has spread into the lymph nodes in his neck. He has undergone all his tests and we are going this morning to get the results and hopefully a treatment plan. It just feels like everything is taking so long.

I'm so angry and crying all the time is this normal?

  • Oh Karen...your reaction is normal. Of course it is. You are frightened for the family and you are staring into a black hole.

Today should bring you a plan of action and once you get that it's easier to bear.  I had base of tongue cancer diagnosed in 2018, had radiotherapy at the age of 68 and I'm still here. Tonsil cancer (there are tonsils on the back of the tongue) is very treatable and curable.

The treatment isn't easy and your husband will need your support but it's doable and you will both come through.

Come back and tell us what the treatment plan is and we can help you along. Good luck for today

  • Hi Karen

I too had base of tongue cancer and finished treatment in August 2018.

It does seem like everything takes a long time before the treatment starts but the team need to carry out essential tests, scans etc so they know exactly what they're dealing with and where to target the treatment.

I hope you and your husband are a little wiser after your meeting this morning.  There are lots of people on the forum who've been through all this and come out the other side so lots of help and support if you need it.
