hi new to this type of forum, i am on here to find out more about this disease, i have a close family member diagnosed with this abd have been told they are terminla so no treatment has been offered, they will however be offered tracheotomy for when they are at a stage where they cannot breathe but other than that i think they have been given just pain killers, would this be correct is anyone else in this situation

  • Hi and welcome to the forum.  I am so sorry you have found yourself here and I hope we can support you and your family member.  It would help if you could let us know what the cancer is and it's site.  H&N cancers cover a whole range of localised areas in the H&N and there will be someone who has detailed experience of your relative's particular cancer.

  • Hi Pat. So sorry to hear this. The best place to get accurate advice is from your relative's medical team if they allow you to speak to them. But having said that there may be somebody on here who has experience of this so as Peter has said.....could you let us know what the cancer is.

Hi just posted above about it being in the throat and at the side of the neck and lymph nodes, don't like to ask my relative too much as it begins to feel like I am asking too many questions already and would like to understand it a bit more, I know it is terminal but just wanted to know would it just be painkillers at the moment until they get the tracheotomy

  • Pat only their medical team can say with certain but a terminal diagnosis usually means that there is no treatment to attempt cure. Sometimes radiotherapy is used to shrink tumours to make the patient comfortable but this is a temporary stop gap. Analgesia might well be the only thing that can be offered. So sorry

  • The tracheotomy is to enable breathing when the cancer blocks the normal airway at the back of the throat

Yes I knew that, so it is just a case of waiting until that time comes I would assume,

Sorry your replies seem to be going into my spam box

  • Best wishes. I hope your relative doesn’t suffer too much. It’s a horrid thing.
