Hello everyone,
I've popped in here from the bladder cancer group as my sole surviving cousin of my generation, aged 57, has four tumours on his larynx. He had the biopsies taken yesterday and the consultant confirmed that, as he has seen hundreds in his career, in his opinion, they are malignant. We will get the stage and grade results and a treatment programme on 1 September which is likely to be chemo/radio.
Naturally, he is very frightened but resigned to it. His father and older brother both died of pancreatic cancer and his mum of brain cancer. They all smoked, in his case we calculated he's smoked over 345,000 fags in 45 years.
I have pointed him towards this group and told him how supportive I found the online community when I was diagnosed with bladder cancer 5 years ago. I can advise him on what to expect with chemo having had gem/cis myself but radiotherapy is not my area of expertise so we'll be coming to you to understand better what he may expect for which I thank you all in advance.
Yours aye,
CB.
Hi crusty. Thanks for pointing your cousin here. There are quite a few folk in the group who have and are dealing with laryngeal cancer. They will pop on I’m sure with wise words info and support. Fingers crossed that all he needs is radio and chemo.
All the best

Hi Crusty, Sounds like your Cousin may possibly be in line for Laryngectomy treatment, I had a total Laryngectomy 12 months ago yesterday, all I would ask is that your Cousin asks questions regarding RT prior to any possible surgery as that can make the surgery more difficult, my Consultant went right through the proceedures and at the stage mine was advised against pre op RT, it will all depend on the stage.
There are a few of us on this blog who have had total removal so tell him to keep on the support and also talk to the MacMillan Speech Therapists and ask questions, they will answer them
Take Care

Thanks Tony, good advice.
I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
As a follow up to my initial post, my cousin has been confirmed as having S3 M0 N0 cancer, two tumors on each vocal chord and it hasn't spread anywhere else. Treatment will be radiotherapy.
He's pretty sanguine about the diagnosis, said it could have been much worse, and will be treated at the Berkshire Cancer Centre, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading where I was treated for bladder cancer so I know he'll be in good hands.
Any tips and learning points about side effects from radiotherapy treatment will be very much appreciated.
Many thanks,
CB.

Thanks for the update. It’s good that his doctors have high hopes for RT.
Radiation aimed at the larynx will make his neck red and the skin may even burn depending on his sensitivity but being targeted on his neck he will mostly be spared the effects in his mouth which are the real killers.
He will probably find it painful to swallow for a time and may need supplemental feeding.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Dani
