A little update on my son, who had surgery 10 days ago for mouth and jaw cancer.  We can't go to visit due to Covid restrictions, but his wife was allowed to visit for a little while on Sunday.  Today (Friday) he has had the remainder of the stitches and clips removed and has been able to have an assisted shower and hair wash.  He has progressed to having sips of water and a little yoghurt.  Hopefully if he continues to progress as he has so far, then he may be home sometime next week.  For all of you with similar experiences, my son was very apprehensive about the surgery and has obviously been in a lot of pain, but it is wonderful what the doctors and nurses can do now.  We are just so grateful to them all that they have saved our son.  Of course, he has a long way to go yet, with radiotherapy, chemo etc, but he is now on the way to recovery.  Take care all of you who are going through a similar thing, there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Having the support on this forum has been so worthwhile.  Janet x

  • Hi Janet. It’s so good to hear if your sons progress and what a lovely mum he has. I’ll keep him in my thoughts and please come back any time you need some support or explanation along the way. It won’t be easy but worth everything to be back with his family

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for reporting back. Good to hear your son is making progress post-op. How well I remember my first sips of water and then eventually graduating to a wonderful cup of tea!

I’m so glad his wife was allowed to visit. My partner came in and got me doing my first walk up and down the ward.

Getting all the tubes out was another good memory. I had a cats-cradle of them at first and could hardly move without disturbing one.

Here’s hoping he is able to come home soon.

I was given effective pain relief medication to continue taking when I came home, and you can gradually reduce it post op, so any pain from the operation does fade away.

  • Thank you for your kind words.  My son has a good network of family and friends who have been very supportive.  The family What's App group has been great as it's meant he has been able to post updates daily on his progress so far.  One of his colleagues at work has been fund raising by doing the 3 Peaks challenge last week in Andrew's name.  So far the total, including gift aid, is well over £2000, with the proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support !

  • Thank you, yes, I think the sips of water was quite a turning point for him.  He has a good network of family and friends to support him.  He's got a long way to go, but at least he's making progress.  Take care x
