Hi guys looking for some advice . I had a visit to dentist today to check up on my TMJ . I have had That for years . I wear a gum shield at nights for it Anyway the dentist noticed two spots on either side unsure my mouth . She has referred me for a biopsy to. “ rule out anything suspicious “) she did say that it being two white spots opposite side of mouth it might just be fine . I had a melanoma diagnosed this year in Jan but generally Been fine since . Any advice or thoughts welcome. Kind regards Adam
Hi Adam. Only the biopsy can tell you I’m afraid. But being each side of the mouth it doesn’t sound like cancer. But then I’m not a doctor so it’s wait and see.
A word of advice do not Google. You will get all sorts of scary info.

Thank you for the reply . Yes the only positive from today is that it is two spots at either side of my mouth ( inside ) . Obviously trying not to worry but just slightly shocked as it was just routine visit really and she has referred me for biopsy ? I’m in Scotland so I’m wondering how long a biopsy referal takes ? Another positive I have thought about is I don’t have any swollen glands anywhere near mouth or head in fact . I notice that’s seems to be a symptom of many head and neck cancers . Regards Adam
Hi Adam,
I absolutely would not worry at all. Bilateral white spots in the mouth are very common and one of the commonest reasons dentists refer to the hospital.
A biopsy just gives a bit more information. I work in a Maxillofacial dept (likely where you have referred)and white spots are something we see all the time and biopsy often. So please don’t lose any sleep and be thankful that you have an attentive dentist.
Hilary
Hi Adam
Your dentist has done the right thing by referring you. Best advise I can give you is keep off Google the info isn’t always correct and will scare you. Stay on here. Remember biopsy’s are to rule things out just as much as rule them in.

Hi Hilary thanks for that reassuring information . I Am trying not to worry but easier said than done . I forget to mention in my posting that I also had a bcc ( possible skin cancer ) biopsy taken a few weeks back hence my anxiety about the white spots in my mouth . I do wonder if it is related to my mouth guard and or the TMJ ? I’ll just need to wait until I get the biopsy . Once again thanks for that info Adam
Thanks Hazel for that advice , yes I’ve learned with my melanoma diagnosis to try snd stay off Google as one usually just reads worse see scenarios or outdated info !! I also check thr date of any articles if I read them cheers Adam
