Hi All
I am now 10 weeks post treatment, following 30 RT sessions and 4 lots of chemo to treat tonsil cancer spread to 2 lymph nodes.
I am pleased to say that I am recovering well. I am pain free and off all meds. Struggling with fatigue but I am getting stronger each week and can now potter about.
My tastebuds are improving too, the metallic and salt tastes have now gone although some things I still can’t taste at all yet. I can eat a wide range of food, even mild spicy food which is a relief as I love a bit of spice lol.
I still can’t eat without drinking copious amounts of water to wash down every mouthful though. I was wondering whether you could tell me how long it took for you to be able to eat better and without pints of water to wash things down, if at all.
I would like to think this would improve although I know I am likely to always have a dry mouth. I get food stuck all around the front of my teeth and gums when I eat so am avoiding eating out at the moment.
Your advice would be most appreciated as always
Thanks
Michelle
Mine has been a very gradual improvement Shell. In the early days I was waking every 30-40 minutes throughout the night to take on water as my mouth was dry as a camel’s armpit. My tongue would stick to the roof of my mouth and I had a nasty salty taste going on. 6 months later and I wake up maybe twice in the night and sometimes not at all. I still keep a glass of water or milk to hand if I eat something dry like a burger or pizza, but that’s all. My big bugbear at present is little bits of food, eg peanuts, getting stuck where my tonsil used to be. It drives me mad!
Like most things with the recovery from this disease progress can be almost imperceptible. There have been days when I suddenly realised I could eat something, feel something or reach up for something I just couldn’t have before. It’s soooo gradual!
I’m not expecting to get back totally to how I was before but still I can see progress happening and things are a damned sight better than they were even just 2 months ago.
As Aristotle said, “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet”.
Hi Michelle slowly slowly by 6 mo th you’ll notice a difference. I’m almost 3 years snd on occasion need an occasional swig of water but it’s rare at her than often. Some days bread needs an help do dip in soup. Dry mouth does improve again slowly I had auricular acupuncture which I swear improved my saliva xx

Thanks so much Mark. I know that I have a way to go but at least if I know to expect nothing much before the 6 month stage then I can accept that it is what it is instead of feeling impatient and wondering if it might be next week.
Very much appreciate your words of wisdom as always
Michelle
Thanks so much Hazel.
It is really useful to know not to expect too much until the 6 month stage, at least that gives me something to aim towards and manages my expectations in the short term.
At what stage did you have the acupuncture? I am guessing it’s a little early yet for me to consider.
Appreciate your wise words as always
Michelle xx
Can’t add much to the others but there is one thing.
It is better to take a Tiny sip of something warm with each mouthful which acts like saliva to enable you to chew. Then you should need only another tiny sip to get it swallowed. That way you are not drinking vast amounts of water when you eat.

I started my acupuncture nearly a year after treatment only because it took me that long to find anybody to do it.
There is lots of research to show that it benefits patients right from the start of treatment. So if you can find somebody you can get a move on.

I will try a cup of tea or coffee as you suggest as see what difference this makes. I have only just started to be able to drink it, have been living on water only.
I have looked at the conversations on the thread and they are very interesting so thanks for sharing.
Had a quick look on Google and there doesn’t seem to be anyone local offering the acupuncture but will speak to my oncologist because he might know of someone. I might also call some local providers as they might know also
Thank you for sharing,
Michelle
Thanks Hazel
I am on the case to find someone and get going so keep your fingers crossed
I wish I could fast forward to this time next year lol but although I have a way to go, I have come so far in a few short weeks so trying to keep my head up and get through to the 4 month test result stage
This time last year I was indestructible so I thought!!
Thanks

Michelle, practitioners all know each other so one can usually pass you on to somebody who can help. I simply sent out emails to all the addresses I could find. I was lucky enough to find a lady in the next town. She had been on a course to do it and I was her first patient.
