Hi all

Hope someone can give me some more information. I have had this mass under my skin near my ear for a few months. I went to my doc 6 weeks ago and got referred for an ultrasound at the hospital. I had my ultrasound and my doctor phoned me with my results this week. He has told me I have a mass swelling a few inches in size on my salivary/parotid gland so referred me for an urgent 2 week scan and blood tests.

I had blood tests done for my liver, kidneys, diabetes and full blood count last Thursday and now have my scan at the ENT department at the hospital.

I am just worrying as to what this swelling is, I know it could be a number of things. I am also not sure what will happen at this scan, will I even be told that day what this is? I'm scared as I have to go alone as my husband works for the emergency services and has to work his early shift.

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The wait, the tests and appointments are very overwhelming, I found comfort in knowing others had travelled a similar journey and successfully recovered, and comfort in knowing that the head and neck team are such experts in this field.

I too cried with the needle biopsy, but what I found was that crying was amazing therapy in itself.

I took time out of work initially, but returning to work gave me focus and distraction. Doing your exams for masters, I hope gives you a distraction too.

Positively this has been found and can be treated.

  • Good luck with your Masters.  I hope the university knows what you are going through at the moment and can make allowances for the stress that waiting causes.  I think I was lucky with my needle biopsy as I never felt it Smiley  However, it did give me a false negative so do listen to your clinical team and take their advice about further investigations and treatment.  Also remember that for the vast majority of people presenting with symptoms it is something other than cancer.  Fingers crossed for that outcome for you Fingers crossed

  • My FNA wasn’t very painful even though they had to go in two or three times to get enough cells. However, what they didn’t warn me was that the lump would swell up quite alarmingly during the following week.
