Head and Neck Cancer

My husband is waiting for treatment for Hypopharyngeal Cancer. He had 2 teeth out last week and was in agony afterwards and has bruising on his face as the dentist was quite brutal on the extraction of one of the teeth! He is really struggling with eating now and his throat is very painful and he has a constant earache. He has been taking 2 paracetamol and codeine 4 times a day does anyone know of any other pain killers he could take?

  • Hi Hip.  Ouch - it sounds really painful, especially the earache.  The only other thing I could suggest is ibuprofen.  When I had surgery I spaced out the Paracetamol, opioids and ibuprofen  around the clock to try and keep the pain in check constantly rather than having peaks and troughs of pain relief.

Other than that, I think it is back to the GP/clinical team as there may be an alternative to codeine that is more effective for your husband.  A few of us don't respond to the normal morphine based drugs - I don't - so discuss with the hospital for alternatives that may be metabolised better by your husband.

  • Hi Hip.

Your husband should have been allocated a Clinical Nurse Specialist or a Macmilan nurse? The best thing to do would be to contact them tomorrow morning to explain what’s happening and ask them to speak to the oncologist about pain relief. Cocodamol never worked for me but alternating morphine with paracetamol kept me comfortable through my treatment.
Does  he have a treatment plan in place yet?
While you wait you can add ibuprofen to the mix.
Good  luck and keep in touch

    Hi Hip

So sorry to hear about your husband and wishing him all the best with his treatment. I was prescribed Oral morphine ("Oramorph") which really did help me last year when other pain relief didn't .

    Best wishes
