Hi. I wonder if anyone can reassure me please. My husband was diagnosed with hpv + base of tongue cancer 2 years ago. He went for his 6 monthly check up today and the consultant spotted some thrush near his cancer site. She has prescribed him some treatment, I’m not sure what yet as he hasn’t picked the prescription up yet. Is this common and can they sure it’s thrush rather than anything more worrying? It wasn’t there at his last check up.

  • Hi  Try not to worry oral thrush is common in HNC patients after radiotherapy. I had several bouts post treatment. Flucozonole a course of tablet did get rid of it. Only for it to return a few months later mine  was mostly in the first year  if treatment. Trust the consultant, they look at the throats of HNC cancer patients daily. They may have given him nystatin instead of flucozonole nystatin didn’t work for me  Is he drinking enough water and not too much sugary sweet things and brushing his teeth 30 minutes after eating or drinking  sweet  stuff? It’s not easy to remember to  but will help in future.

  • Is this common

Yes, very. Your husband's consultant will know exactly what she is looking at

I had it once during treatment but luckily I have avoided it since

  • Thanks so much Hazel. Always a voice of reassurance . So would you think it’s more unusual 2 years down the line? Did you have to get re looked at to make sure it had cleared up? I don’t think his consultant wants to see him for 6 months.

  • o would you think it’s more unusual 2 years down the line?

It depends entirely on conditions in his mouth. The damage to saliva alters the balance of normal bacteria fungi and yeasts. How thorough is he with oral hygiene and how much sweet stuff does he eat? Does he keep his mouth moist all the time?

  • Thanks so much Dani. He does have quite a sweet tooth so that might explain it. It’s the first appointment I’ve not been with him and he had a different consultant to usual. She asked him if he had any discomfort at the back of his mouth and asked for pictures of his last examination to compare. This really worried my husband. Then she decided it was thrush and prescribed Fluconazole. Do you think he should have a follow up to make sure it’s gone. You can’t really see it with out thr camera?
