Mouth swelling during eating post radiation treatment.

Hi everyone,

I finished my treatment three weeks ago. I’m starting to introduce solid food into my diet but have struggled with my mouth swelling up it feels like the tissue inside my cheeks is really inflamed and painful.

It could be the things that I’m eating but pretreatment this didn’t happen. Most recently my mouth reacted to jacket potato, cheese, beans and pickle. A meal that was  fine previously.

Just wondering if anyone had experienced a similar issue post treatment? It’s very annoying as I can finally eat and want to get back some of the weight I’ve lost and say goodbye to the shakes.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Dan

    Hi Dan

You've hit the nail on the head with this sentence. Your mouth has changed and a lot of things that were OK now aren't...but they likely will be in the future

Beans? Do you mean baked beans? Tomatos and tomato sauce a known post Tx irritants and pickle? wow! I couldn't eat pickle for months.

It's trial and error, try blander food. You have a "new normal" to live with

  • Hi Dan, you are still very early days into your recovery, and it's great that you can and want to eat, you will have to be careful what you eat due to the effects of the RT. Sugary and acidic foods will be what is making your mouth swell. It's all trial and error, things will get easier with time.
