Thyroid Function Check

How soon after CRT for tonsil and lymph node cancer should you get TFT’s checked?
I finished treatment on 15th May.  Feeling tired most afternoons and if just sat on the sofa I can very easily nod off. Feeling cold ( I lost a stone and still at the same weight) and still shedding some hair.
Not sure if this is still the effects of the CRT or the start of an under active thyroid.  I was told yearly checks are sufficient.

Many thanks

Ally

  • I had my first check at six months with similar symptoms but suspected it was the effects of RT and I was right. I would expect weight gain with an underactive  thyroid. Make sure you get TSH checked as well as thyroid hormone.

  • I’m 3 months post and I’ve put over a stone on since treatment finished. I mentioned this to GP and they checked mine last week. Can back bang in the middle of normal range so I guess it’s just the cream cakes and pizzas I’ve been hammering

  • I’m eating really well, good variety and now larger portions. However, I can’t tolerate cream, pastry or high fat foods which has made things tricky.

No harm in getting it done. I suspect it will be normal but it will give you a baseline.
I felt cold for a long time and used to go to bed with a fleece and a hat on.
