My husband is going through radiotherapy for tongue cancer, we are in week three.  All food taste horrible but when he does eat he feels full after just a child’s portion.  Has anyone else had this issue.  He feels full too after one fortisip bottle.  Not sure how I am going to get a number of bottles in when the time comes which I think will be soon.

  • Hello Mushroom, your husband's struggle sounds so familiar. Has he not been offered a feeding tube at all by now? My husband had a PEG fitted prior start of treatment. His oncologist made him aware about the difficulties he would face in advance. And was he right. By week 3 my husband couldn't get anything down orally. Inwithin weeks he lost a lot of weight. Feeding him through the PEG wasn't easy,as he was asleep for most of the day,so I had to feed him.To get some extra calories through the PEG he tried HAUL bottles. His body tolerated these better then the Ensures, funny enough. We managed to keep his weight steady that way.It took a few weeks after treatment finished when he was able to swallow softish food, also taste took a while to get back to normal. All the best. • Hi mushroom. Your thread title.. do you mean RIG not RIP?
I overcame the feeling full problem and the overwhelming time it took to feed by pump feeding at night. I switched the pump in at bedtime and was drip fed slowly through the night. It left me completely free to be as normal as I could through the day.

  • Hi Mushroom, I assume you meant RIG feeding tube, if so, he should use the tube, it is important he gets the nourishment he needs during his treatment and when recovering.

  • Hi, yes my husband has a RIG tube in which we are using and we were aware of the issues we would have.  I don’t know why he feels so full after a feed as a feed and flush is only 400ml.  Perhaps it’s the position of where the RIG was placed.  He had a failed PEG as they could not find a safe place to put it, hence RIG.
