A Few Questions on Recovery

Hi all,

I am very close to 3 months post treatment (17th Oct). Base of Tongue and Lymph node HPV +. I will be having my scan next Friday.
Overall I am really pleased with the progress I’ve made but wondering if others have experienced anything similar.
1 Aching Tongue. On the whole I don’t get any pain but sometimes if I press my tongue in roof of mouth it still aches.
2 Swallowing through night. There is a substantial difference in my swallowing ability through the night and first thing in morning. Through the day I have no problems at all and it seems to rectify once I’ve had a morning coffee. I have quite a lot of Lymphodema in neck so not sure if this is relevant.
3 Fluctuating dry mouth. Some days I have no issues at all and other days it is quite bad. It’s usually resolved with some gum but frustrating that it does fluctuate.
4 Urinating. Since my treatment finished and probably more so since I had rig removed I seem to need to get up 3 or 3 times in the night for the toilet. Also in the day I find I need to go quite quickly without much warning.

so just wondering about others experiences and if there is chance these things can still improve further.

Many Thanks

  • Hi

    1. is perfectly normal so put it away. This will change through the years. I still have a spot where my tongue joins my throat at the retropharyngeal triangle which has fibroses and sometimes really bothers me. I also get burning tongue some days.

    2. I has just this and put t down to lymphoedma inside. I put this to my oncologist and he agreed. Swallow exercises and it eventually goes

    3. Yes spot on and again normal

    4. I can't help you with....I'm on HRT to stop my bladder irritation but still need to pee at night. That won't be any help to you though....sorry

  • Thanks Dani, that’s really useful and very reassuring. They said I didn’t need to do swallowing exercises due to the wide variety of food I was eating. It’s never the same at night either. Some nights are better than others depending on what I’ve eaten the previous day
