Hi im now 18 weeks post chemo/radio treatment .I saw the hospital dentist pre treatment but haven't heard anything since. My own dentist has contacted me saying im due a checkup and I usually go every 4 month to the hygienist but im under the impression that I will see the hospital dentist and they refer you back to your own dentist.  Plus I believe we have flouride paste coating every so many months. Don't know whether to phone the hospital dentist to see what im supposed to do. As its been 6 months since seeing him . What was everyone else's experience?

  • Hi Tracy, can't believe it's 18wks since you finished your treatment, well done to have come this far. Knowing that you got treatment under the same trust then my hubby, we got told to contact our own dentist to arrange further treatments, make sure that they are informed about you are now being a cancer patient,so they can put it on your file. Special toothpaste, appointments etc can then be adjusted to you if that makes sense. Hope this helps. Mel x

  • Hi Lotty

I’m 12 weeks post treatment and saw the hospital dentist on Fri. She has now discharged me back into the care of my own dental practice. My appointment came through after I’d finished treatment.

Why not contact your CNS and ask. I’m certain you need a follow up from hospital dentist to make sure everything’s ok following treatment.

    Take care

  • Yes we usually have a referral to our local dental hospital before seeing our own dentist, I had a couple of gum trays  made for me and regular check ups before being discharged back to my own dentist.

  • I know Mel, its flown. Yes ive i formed them  as i was due a checkup when i started treatment. Its just that i usually go the hygienist pretty regularly. I go tomorrow for my mri ..fingers crossed xx

  • Thanks Ally.

I think i will as thats what I've been waiting for. Xx

  • I thought so. Im wondering whether I've just slipped through the net. I'll give then a ring thanks xx

  • I can only add what my situation was. The hospital dentist deals only with complications needing invasive treatment after RT finishes. After that it’s back to your own dentist, NHS if you’re lucky… most of us aren’t .
I pay for my own fluoride varnish every three months.

  • Hi Dani

So did you not see the hospital dentist after treatment, did you just resume your normal dentist appointments?

  • Mel ,did Keith not see the hospital dentist after treatment then. Did he just go back to his own dentist. I know it probably depends upon which nhs trust  your under. We are the same area .I really want to go my hygienist at least. Xx

No, there was no need and yes I went back to my own dentist who was fascinated by the appearance of my throat. I have a lot of telangectasia

About two years later I needed a wisdom tooth out which the hospital did. I may need some reconstruction if/when a crown fails and the hospital promised they would put in an implant but I have since moved out of Wales so that window is closed.
