Coated tongue

Hi all

Has anyone any ideas how to get rid of a coated tongue due to dry mouth from radiotherapy?
I’ve tried sodium bicarbonate mouthwashes, soft brushing, copper tongue scraper……being careful not to damage newly regenerating taste buds!
Also used gels, sprays and moisturising mouthwash but nothing seems to work.
It looks and feels awful. It’s definitely not thrush and oncologist says it’s just a side effect from the RT.

I’m 11 weeks post CRT treatment for tonsil cancer.
I’d be very grateful if anyone has any miracle cures.

Sadly no, especially this early on but chewing gum helps.

  • Thank you Dani

I’ve tried chewing gum but find it tricky due to hardly any saliva. It just ends up as a dry lump. I’ll keep persevering x

  • Yes do. Your minor salivary glands will recover and chewing helps them do that. It is worth trying acupuncture.

  • Hi  it’s really early days although you might not think it. A tip given by a late  effects nurse carry a small spray bottle of water with you and use to refresh your mouth .plus make sure you’re drinking between 2-3,liters if water a day. Tea and coffee do dehydrate you so try not to drink those I sipped liken peppermint tea when my mouth could tolerate it. Night time I still  use xyimelts day time salvia is acceptable but night time I do get dry. A glass if water is sweats at my side. I also cure it but sugars free gum often used water in early day to get it masticating   It will improve it all takes time. I continued to improve even past 2 years.post treatment.

  • Hi there,

Yes im the same Ally. Im 15 weeks post radiotherapy,  like you ive tried everything.  Its worse after drinking the fresubin drinks I mix them with milk so dont know if its the milk also. Yet when I eat a meal it doesn't tend to be as bad.  I guess the food naturally  sloughs the tongue. Its not thrush, I had that early on , so I too would like any ideas

  • Hi Tracy

Yes, I definitely notice it’s a lot worse after the fresubins as well!
I’m really conscious of it, especially when talking to people.

    Take care
