Ultrasound Scan

Hi all,

my husband is now 17 months post treatment for T2n2bm0 HPV tonsil cancer with ENE, with a clear pet scan at 3 months.

he has been for his review today, which we requested to be brought forward as the affected part of his neck (he had a neck dissection) seems to be raised above the scar line.

the nasendoscope was clear and consultant said it looked great but said he would order an ultrasound scan for his neck as it was too hard due to fibrosis to be able to know what was happening, although he did say he couldn’t feel anything nasty at one point.

within two hours an ultrasound appointment has come through but it also says it is for a FNA. We are now spiralling thinking that there is a recurrence there with the addition of the FNA request.

has anybody gone through this and it not be a recurrence? It has put us straight back to how we felt two years ago and it is dreadful.

thanks in advance

  • Not quite the same but I was on watchful waiting for a number of years and had a few scares along the way.  I suspect the request for a FNA was made from an abundance of caution and also to avoid the need for a subsequent appointment is the sonographer saw anything that they thought needed a FNA which is what they did to me once to avoid unnecessary waiting around.  Hopefully it will just be scar tissue and nothing else.

  • I agree with peter

I would think the FNA was added in case the radiographer spotted anything rather than waiting for yet another appointment

Good luck. I hope all is well

  • Thank you Dani and Peter for your replies. My logical brain knows that there are many benign possibilities but the anxious brain gets in there first and assumes the worst. We are keeping everything crossed x
