Hi all,

so today’s issue seems to be my mouth constantly filling with thick creamy foam like saliva. This has been going on a few days but seems worse today. I have to constantly spit it out from morning to night. Just wondering if anyone else had this.

for context I’ve 6 radiotherapy sessions left of my 30

thanks

  • Yes. I just had to spit it out. My mouth was chewing the thick saliva into a foam unconsciously. A frothy mouth is a classic sign of xerostomia

I used to go through rolls of kitchen roll  at night I just dropped the used tissue to the floor then collected it up into a paper bag to pop into the Rayburn

    Its fairly normal

Drinking lots helps whether the intake is oral or via tube.

  • Thanks. I’m getting nearly 2 litres of water in a day through tube plus feed. Just wondering if there is anything that can be given for it. How long did it last Dani?

  • If the froth then thick mucous is a real problem making you choke or nauseous then some people have been given off label Carbocysteine.
I can’t recall exactly how long it lasted but definitely for a good couple of months after treatment end. It just stopped practically overnight when the surviving small salivary glands stepped up.

  • I’ve been using the carbo stuff 3 times a day helps bring up the mucus but that’s about it

  • It’s just patience. The foam is your thick saliva mixed up with air.

  • Hi it’s common it gues as quickly as it came to be replaced with dry mouth. I literally pulled it out with my fingers gross as it sounds.
I was prescribed carbusistine to thin it did it work nit really. I found soda water or flat Diet Coke rinsed round mouth helped. I was having 3 liters of liquid a day including like warm peppermint Rez in to feeding tube ti increase my uptake.
