Hello,
I'm being treated for nasopharyngeal cancer and am now in the 4th week of a 7 week course of radiotherapy having already had a 9 week chemotherapy course and 3 weeks of chemo radiation. The mucositis started in the second week of RT and it's now getting really painful. I've been given several different mouthwashes and gels but would love to find something that actually protects the mouth during the RT sessions rather than just reacting to the damage.
Does anyone know of a product that might fit the bill? I dread to think what my mouth will be like at the end of this. I know nasopharyngeal cancer isn't common but this part of the treatment seems to be quite common amongst head and neck cancer patients.
Here's hoping somebody may be able to help
Julio

To be truthful there isn’t. I had Caphosol which is buffered to supposedly offer some protection but you just have to ride it.

Hi Julio
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is supposed to be able to help. It is not that common for NHS patients with few hospitals experimenting with it. I think a couple of our members may have had it. However, if it has not already been suggested to you then I suspect it is not in your hospital's armoury and by the time you have sorted something it may be too late to help.
Not protection, but other than that heavyweight painkillers seem to be the norm. I regularly used a self made salt and bicarb mouthwash that kept the mouth clean and stopped infection in the sores. I also found a mouthwash called Oral 7 worked for me. Many others were useless, but I think it is a case of trying a few to see if anything works as we all react differently to various options. My dietitians had packs of various mouthwashes made up for patients to take away and try.
