Hi

my husband was diagnosed in march with Head and neck cancer, tonsil/throat

He started 6 weeks of radiotherapy in June and is currently on week 5

part of his treatment included 2 cycles of chemotherapy (cisplatin) the first one was in week 1 and he had an allergic reaction and ended up in A&E

he did manage 450ml before the reaction occurred.they decided to change to carboplatin which was scheduled for Tuesday this week however 13ml in he started to have similar symptoms so they stopped it and sent him for observations to make sure he was ok.

They have now said in his last week they will give him

Docetaxel which isn’t platinum based but is still known for allergic reactions so I am really worried..

I also wondered if anyone had had similar experiences?
people have said it’s the radiotherapy that is the main treatment but I am so worried if he has another reaction and doesn’t manage any chemo this will have a negative affect on his treatment as he is stage 4

  • Chemo is an extra layer of treatment for some of us....used to mop up micro cells...Radiotherapy is the main weapon used to cure the cancer.

Chemotherapy adds around 6% to the chances of complete cure

Both Cisplatin and Docetaxel are powerful radio sensitisers making the cancer more susceptible to radiation but the RT is the main event. The allergy pathways to the two drugs are quite different so hopefully he will be OK. Fingers crossed

  • Good evening Chaps. You will be surprised how many people dont finish the course of chemo because of the side effects. As Micky55 mentioned, Chemo is just an extra layer of treatment that runs alongside the radiotherapy. Hopefully, the Docetaxel will be more friendly for your husband. Wishing you and your husband all the best.
