Hi,

I’m new here. My husband has just been diagnosed with the above. We are devastated and very frightened. We never thought we’d be here again after he had prostate cancer 8 years ago, which was successfully treated.

we are currently waiting to see the consultant with the results of the MRI and Ct after his biopsy. His ct has come back normal which we are very relieved about. This was an incidental finding, he has no real symptoms apart from slight voice change which could be down to his steroid inhaler. He’s fit and well and this has knocked us off our feet!

Can anyone please give us some reassurance, my brain keeps taking me to worst case scenario and I’m really struggling to sleep and function.

Ive read that this type of cancer usually responds well to treatment?

If there’s anything anyone can share I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks

  • Hi. That is exactly the cancer I had and I’m still here seven years later. Not just here but well. Take a look at my blog.
I didn’t have any lymph node involvement so got away with RT alone.

HPV driven oropharyngeal cancer is uniquely sensitive to radiation and cure rates are in excess of 90%
The treatment is not an easy ride but doable and effective.
Stay with us, ask anything you want. There will always be somebody with an answer.

  • Glad to hear you’re doing so well Dani. I’m praying we have the same result. I just can’t wait to find out the full results and treatment plan as living like this isn’t living at all. I’m thinking if there’s no spread to his chest (thank goodness) then surely it wouldnt have spread anywhere else and treatment will be offered. Outpatient appointment is 1/7.

    Thanks for your help

  • Good evening, so sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis. As a fellow wife I can feel for you. I remember the day when we got his diagnosis. All the different emotions kicking in at the same time. My husband took it better then I did,it seems like a blur now, listening to the consultant that day. What we took from that day was that this cancer is very curable. And it got us through. Also the treatment was tough and recovery cruel,to say the least. Now 18ish months post treatments,he is doing somewhat well, it's a new kind of normal now. Having to put up with some lasting side effects, but I couldn't think about the alternative. So stay strong and positive. It might be a "one step forward, two steps back kind of journey", but you will get there. All my best wishes. Fellow wife Mel x

  • Hi Michaela

This cancer rarely spreads any further than the lymph nodes which are pretty good at stopping it dead. so try not to panic.

  • Good evening Mich75, an honest reply from Dani and good advice about Dr Google. I know what it is like waiting for the results and diagnoses from the consultant, i was always different from you and tried to look on the positive side and take one day at a time. Most head and neck cancers respond well to surgery and treatment. Wishing you and your husband all the best and good luck with the scan and biopsy results.Take care.

  • Thank you MrsM.  Glad to hear your over the worst!  My husband doesn't seem to want to read/learn anything about it, whereas I'm researching and trying to find things that will make us feel better.  I really do feel like we're in limbo land at the moment.

I really appreciate your honest and kind words at this difficult time.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks for your encouraging message.  I wish I could be a glass half full person.  Just need to get the full story then hopefully we can start to feel more optimistic.  Praying the news isn't too bad.

    Thank you.
