Blocked ear!

I finished radiotherapy around 2 months ago and am really struggling with a blocked ear (think it is due to having no hairs in my ear), I’ve been to the doctors who have told me that there’s no wax in my ear (which is completely untrue as I have a camera and can see loads all over my eardrum!), I’ve tried to speak to my CNS for help and advice on wether I should pay to have microsuction, but was advised to wait for my 12 week follow up, which is three weeks away. I’ve tried sodium bicarbonate drops and although they did help, haven’t solved the issue. Besides the tinnitus and hearing loss, I think it is causing headaches and vertigo.

If anyone has any tips in the meantime I’d be very grateful Relaxed️

Thanks

  • Hi. Glue ear is really common post Tx

Could it be that? Maybe pay for a private audiologist who will look inside your ear but to be truthful I can’t imagine a GP lying to you.

  • I’m more than happy to share an image of the inside of my ear if you want! I don’t think they were lying, I don’t think they looked well enough or perhaps didn’t know what they were looking for.

  • No you can’t put photos up here.
I think GPs look at ears all the time.
Send an image to your CNS?

  • BTW RT has destroyed the hairs in the external canal of one of my ears too plus I have cochlear damage resulting in high end loss. Hearing aids fix that

  • With all due respect, I am telling you there is wax in my ear. GPs definitely miss things, the purpose of me putting that information on my post was so no one told me to contact my GP. I am looking for any tips people might have to help me with this issue, not someone to tell me that my GP wouldn’t lie to me and that they “look at ears all the time”.

  • Almond oil...consult your CNS first?

  • With all due respect

with equal respect my suggestion is to have a professional look at it.
Personally I wouldn’t put anything down an ear so close to RT treatment but micky’s suggestion to try almond oil but contact your CNS is a good one. Send your CNS an image of the inside of your ear.
Sorry I rubbed you up the wrong way.

  • After my maxillectomy I too had a blocked ear and lost hearing in that ear. I went back to my surgeon who said that there was a build up of fluid after my op. He put in a gromet and the fluid drained away over time and I got my hearing back. Not saying that this is the case with you but might be worth following that thought up with your surgeon.

Hope things get resolved soon for you.

  • You sound very frustrated and your frustration has spilt over into the group that are trying to help you.

I have lots of problems with my ears and all the test show good hearing and no wax buildup.  I have RT induced dermatitis in one ear where the beam exited.  That sometimes leads to a dangerous infection affecting the whole ear.  However, with the help of my clinical team and audiologists I have learned to self manage it over the last year and now it is just one of the many side effects that afflict us post treatment.

We are all unique and during and post treatment we suffer similar but subtly different issues.  We have to own our own health and advocate for ourselves.  Continue to talk to the professionals in a non demanding, collaborative way to seek further advice on an issue that is clearly distressing you.

  • Hi there ,

Sorry I have no tips ,but I had to have my ears checked after treatment as they felt (full). My consultant said I had lost high end hearing due to the RT . But to be sure he ordered me an MRI to check inside . All came back clear. We are warned of the possible hearing after affects before treatment, but some get problems and others don't ,I'd check with your team before putting things in your ears so close after treatment .

    Take care
