Painful jaw

Only one week in to CRT for SCC hpv positive left tonsil cancer.  I’ve woken up this morning with a very tender jaw line and looks like it’s swollen. Neck also feels the same. One small blistered area noticeable upper right gum at the back yesterday but that feels slightly better today.  Is this a normal reaction so early into treatment?
Feel really frightened.

  • Hi Ally,

I think it is relatively unlikely to be a reaction to the treatment this early on.  I had something similar at your stage and my oncologist assured me it was not the treatment but just a coincidence.  Most of us get significant side effects around the end of week 3.  Mention it to your radiologists tomorrow and seek proper reassurance.  BTW any changes are worth mentioning to your radiologists early on as the sooner some action is taken the lesser the effects.

  • Thank you Peter.
Just seems odd. The back of my neck around the hairline is also quite tender ( presumably exit points ) I’m wondering if I’ve had an early inflammatory response as my tumour has decreased in size, something I thought didn’t happen until a good few weeks in and later on. Feel very peculiar as well, bit spaced out.
