SCM shoulder muscle

A side effect of the accessory nerve damage affecting SCM muscle that I’ve just discovered is total inability to lift head up off floor when lying flat or to lower it down flat from upright . Would this come back if/when the shoulder muscle hopefully recovers ( up to two years according to physio) . I’m hoping it will be sooner as I enjoy Pilates and this function is necessary for a lot of exercises . Does anyone have similar experience / recovery timeline ?

many thanks Fingers crossed tone1Fingers crossed tone1Fingers crossed tone1

  • Hi Elizabeth,

I did have some head movement issues early on after a dissection but they eased quite rapidly - within a few weeks.  My longer term issue was lifting things - even a coffee cup - with my arm outstretched.  I could not do that for around 2 years.  I had physio and one day I suddenly realised that I was able to do what I previously could not.  It is a very slow and gradual healing process and I think your physio's timeframe is a good one.
