1 year post scan on Friday

My husband has his ct scan on Friday but I have question.
he was treated and cured of head and neck squamous cell oropharynx stage 1. He was a smoker of many years.

Because he was a former smoker ( he quit during treatment )  it’s been hard but he’s doing well. Anyway the dr recommended a one year ct of his chest because of the smoking. They said he didn’t need to have anything else scanned unless we wanted to.  His follow-ups every 3 months have been fine. No masses felt in his neck and his entire f/u have been normal. My question is would it be best to have them do a ct of every area  or just the chest.  I’m getting nervous again. Please say a prayer for him or well wishes. Ty in advance.

  • It's a judgement call only you and your husband can make, your GP and oncology team will guide you but it's your decision in the end...

    Good luck...

  • Why expose the body to more radiation? Radiation causes cancer on its own and we get enough locally in treatment . Would a CT pick up a tiny tumour?

I won't even let my dentist do X-rays

Chest CT is good for ex smoker lung cancer , though. They do them here in the UK

  • Good evening markmac, its good of them to offer the scans, but i would just stick with the chest scan, i was a smoker but was not offered any further scans. Some people do ask for scans, mainly for reassurance. Great to hear his follow-up appointments are going well. Wishing you and your husband all the best for the chest scan, take care.

  • Thank you. May I ask you a question and what was your diagnosis because his was oral fairings cancer stage one as I mentioned before. When you went back for your yearly, they didn’t wanna check your original cancer anymore. They just wanted to do a chest x-ray because you were also a smoker. ?

  • When you went back for your yearly, they didn’t wanna check your original cancer anymore.

Yearly scans for the original cancer are not routine here in the U.K.  We get a post Tx MRI or PET/CT at 12/16 weeks and that’s it.
If you are offered a place in the PetNeck trial then you get a scan at a year before going on PIFU ( patient initiated follow up)

  • Good evening, markmac. Mine is a bit more complicated, my first cancer was floor of the mouth (2008), which started with me thinking i had an ulcer on my lower gum, but it turned out to be an aggressive tumour ,stage 4. I used to be seen every two weeks to begin with , increasing to one a month ,however by the time i reached 10 months my lower teeth started to become wobbly and a bit sore so i had a biopsy done which showed i had lower jaw bone cancer (2009) so i had new lower jaw reconstructed which all healed up extremely well until in 2010 i noticed a lump on my neck which i thought was a boil but it was cancer of my voicebox (larynx) so i had it removed, thankfully they managed to stop it spreading or re-occuring. Maybe if they scanned me earlier they might have noticed something was not quite right but we will never know as i never showed any signs of having cancer ,it just appeared. Sorry for the long explanation, all the best.

  • Hi Marcman. I had this conversation with my consultant this week. I am 21 months post surgery for T1N1M0 HPV tonsil cancer. I had a 12M full body PET scan but they’re unlikely to do another unless I want one. I have a head/chest MRI planned for Sept. I get that it’s reassuring to get clear scans but it’s also a rollercoaster of anxiety waiting for the scan and results. Instead, I try to get reassurance that they’re confident I don’t need it.

The flip side to this is that I was seeing my consultant because I’d had a persistent chest/respiratory infection and they were very thorough in checking everything was OK.
