Hi all

Today marks me finishing 30 RT and 2 chemo sessions and have managed so far with hardly any pain killers other than the occasional paracetamol.  Over the last few days the mucus in my mouth and throat have got worse, really thick and with a sore throat that only hurts when I swallow.

any one have hints or tricks for the thick mucus, swilling only seems to last a few minutes, sipping water is the same.

thanks

Lee

    1. Good evening Lee, firstly well done on finishing the treatment, especially with coping on paracetamol alone My hubby struggled with even finding the right painkillers. However, I don't think that there are any tricks to cope with this mucus. My husband's mucus got so thick at some point,he could pull it out of his mouth. I guess it's more a case of taking it day by day, eventually it cleared of. Swallowing even water got impossible for him too, that even that needed to go through his PEG. This is only my husband's story, everyone is different so,maybe you get some more helpful responses, persevere,it will get better. Fellow wife Mel .
  • Good evening Lee, i used to use Corsodyl as it helps to break down the mucus, even good old salted water does the trick. Well done in getting through your treatment and all the best for a good recovery, take care.

  • Hi there ,

Can absolutely agree there, it does disappear and get easier, as quickly as it arrived though Fingers crossed..

I had a nebulizer twice a day which helped .

Im now in week three of a second round of therapy proton beam ,this time. Not looking forward to that mucus if gets me again .

Hope you both get rid soon

  • Good evening Tang, well done for getting so far,I guess you are half way through? Still a while to go? My husband tried a nebuliser, it didn't do much for him,so he gave up on that one. He did have a spit bowl next to the bed, like to forget that picture, lol. However, he's now a little over 14mths post treatment, doing well considering, living with a couple of enoying side effects, which will probably be with him for a while, but I couldn't think about the alternative. It was a one step forward and two backward kind of journey, but we got there. So persevere and don't expect miracles, you will get there too. Hug fellow wife Mel.

  • I didn’t have really bad mucus during my radiotherapy (came about week 3 of 6) but it was worse than normal. My oncology team told me the best thing I could do was ensure I kept really well hydrated (I’m not a massive water drinker by nature) so I did and it made a big difference. It didn’t last long for me, in fact it cleared before 5he end of week 6 - result. So, good hydration will help.
