Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing I am and I would really appreciate honesty.
I had surgery in 2024 to remove cancer off my tongue and then had 6 weeks of radiotherapy.
I have recently had pain in my neck but there is no lump but the pain is horrible.
I have seen my consultant and he is referring me for an ultrasound, I have this tomorrow.
as you can imagine, I am scared but also aware that the cancer my have returned.
has anyone else experienced the same thing and if so what was the outcome?

Thank you

  • Hi Ducklings.
I’ve just looked back through your posts to discover that you had a neck dissection. Was this both sides? And what side is the pain?
I ask because there may well be a link

  • Hi Dani,

It was just on my right side and that’s where the pain is. They didn’t take all of the lymph nodes.
it’s a constant sharp pain and it’s unbearable when it’s touched

  • I bet it’s nerve damage from the dissection. Your consultant is just being careful. Treatment failure is really rare.

Do you have a date for your US?

    Fingers crossed.

  • Let us know how you get on. Sonographers usually tell you what they have found so do ask.

  • Hi Ducklings.

A few months ago, at his ENT clinic, a lump was found in my OH's neck, right side. He'd had bilateral neck dissections and also has lymphoedema, but didn't have any pain. An ultrasound was carried out a few days later, and as these are done in real time I was able to ask the sonographer there and then what she thought. She replied she'd found nothing concerning but the results would be sent to the referring doctor and we'd hear from them a few days later, which we did. Scar tissue beneath the lymphoedema was the culprit, and we were told not to worry. I'm hoping you'll have the same outcome but do ask the sonographer's opinion after your scan is finished.

Good luck for today and try not to worry, as you should get the results very soon. Sending hugs xxx

  • I’ve also had tongue cancer and a neck dissection a couple of years ago and the pain in my neck is worse of a night when I’m in one position which leads to ear ache and headache. I wish you all the best with your scan x

  • Hi, hope you’re well and your ultrasound went well? What stage did you have initially if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks
