Extracapsular spread

Hi,

My partner had T2 N2b M0 HPV+ tonsil cancer with extra capsular spread. He had TORS surgery and then we found out about the extra capsular spread and our surgeon said that this would mean he would need Chemoradiotherapy as it could mean a more aggressive cancer. This absolutely floored us as we were really hoping the surgery was going be enough to sort him out and sent both of our heads spiralling into an awful place.

Tomorrow, he will be a year out of treatment and in his words he is back to being the ‘normal idiot’ he has always been ️

Do not Google it, it will send you down a rabbit hole that you don’t need and I think all extra capsular spread is indicative of now is adding in chemo with the radiotherapy as a gold standard treatment

Thank you for the message, you’ve made me feel much better and you’re right, just think that will just influence the treatment. He’s still fit, healthy and 40 so we need to stay positive - it doesn’t mean it’s incurable 

You are welcome. Good luck with the treatment - that in itself will be extremely draining for both of you, but it is do-able. There will be some tough days ahead but before you both know it you will be through the other side. 

My partner was 52 when he went through his treatment and I think being on the younger side does have its benefits when it comes to recovery. He had a rough couple of months but is doing really well now, eating as normal etc and his taste is probably at 90%. We feel very thankful and extremely lucky!
